Needs a liver transplant thanks to advanced cirrhosis.:eek:ld:

Needless to say, his plight won't get too much attention outside of Germany or Turkey, despite Sam ticking all the boxes as a "fan friendly" and "colourful contender" who, as a former European Champion, fought Danny Williams, JC Gomez, Oleg Maskaev, Clay-Bey, Julius Francis, Oliver McCall, Paolo Vidoz etc, and was a former World Amateur Champion and Bronze Medallist.

Yes. You never see me and Rainmaker in the same room at the same time. Maybe I am also batman...or maybe this is a boxing forum where boxing-related stuff get's posted?

Damn, that's pretty shocking. He's 36? A liver transplant? What the fuck has he been drinking? Anti-freeze?

When's the last time Julius Francis or Lawrence Clay-Bey were mentioned in a boxing-rated discussion?

I was pretty miffed when I saw it. He must have been drinking steadily, and from a young age too.

I was just alluding to the chaps career, which I considered a trifle polite, considering his current distress, and possible death. To answer your question, the last time Julius Francis was mentioned in boxing discussion was probably when Tyson fought him, some years before going on to fight Lennox Lewis.

That's stunning. The guy had power, relentlessness, a good chin, and a good punchrate. He wasn't a future world champ, but he was a decent fringe contender. Wow, he sounds screwed and that's really sad.

In 2008 he supposedly retired over a dispute he had with somebody in Turkey over the amateur system  Maybe he couldn't get served at an amateur tourney or something. It all reminds me a bit of Gerry Quarry- sort of knowing he was ill but not knowing he was ill.:dunno:

There's no room in this story for digs at Western media.

I'd just like to know how the hell a guy this young, in such short order, has managed to develop advanced cirrhosis, a condition that generally takes 30 years of hard drinking. The guy must be drinking like Jim Morrison.

Well there was a guy called Jerry Ballard who was stabbed to death in an alley in 1999, he got a small write up in Ring Magazine, where he was mentioned as a former NABF Champion and one-time John Ruiz victim.

Samil's not dead yet. Give it time. He'll get his time in the sun. The classic and relevant Ring magazine will observe his death (once he's dead). Believe it. Celebrate it.

    Poor bastard all the same.

They are talking about a transplant but there is no way they will give him one unless they are sure he wont go back to the drinking.

There is of course no hard proof he has caused it through alcohol alone, it's rapid advancement may be down to his having a pre-disposition. He may also have a painkiller issue like a lot of former athletes do, paracetamol and it's cousins are known liver destroyers.
