Fights that DID take place, but you wish they hadn't...

I took someone else's idea and reversed it, and am willing to take credit for having done so.

 

Randall Bailey vs. Julio.

As great a fight as it was, I think it ruined Bailey who had much more upside (for a variety of reasons) than Julio did.

Bailey all but knocked Julio out but the guy kept coming back from the dead to punish Bailey with barrage after barrage.

Result: two shot fighters, a fight that should've been fight of the year but wasn't televised, and two fighters who peaked without the financial pay-off that should've accompanied it.

 

i like bailey, and saw the fight live. but lets face it the guy was never going to be elite, and the fight didnt ruin him. he was what he was. a contender with power in both hands, but who lacked the skills and durability to be the best in the division.

Roy should've stayed at heavy and notched a couple more top names then retired as the Goat. Cutting 30 pounds of roid muscle at that advanced age was a ridiculous move that had everyone gasping at prior to that fight taking place. It opened up the door for this joke of a late-stage career.

Rahman? Tua? Golota? Vitali? McCline? Even if you can even consider any of these guys as top names at the time, would Roy have won any of those? Personally, I think Roy did well enough just to beat Ruiz (a legit HW contender). He never really belonged in the HW division.

Why couldn't have Roy beaten either Byrd or Holyfield in 2003?

And actually the fight that was on the table for Roy was in fact against Holyfield, a fight that both fighters aggressively pursued before it eventually fell through thanks to a series of questionable decisions (King's interference, Evander's stubbornness, etc.).

 

Along with fighting Oscar comes the biggest payday of a fighter's career and a lot of increased fame and notoriety. Not that Mayweather was anything close to "humble" before the De La Hoya fight but i think that victory is part what has made him intolerable today. If that fight never happened maybe (a big maybe) he would have fought bigger challenges instead of thinking he's king shit without having to prove it.

 

It'd be worth it.

LOL. I'm sure Roy didn't make any outrageous demands for the Holyfield fight to kill it as well. Jones nuthuggers will say anything to protect their hero. Dude wanted no part of this and never did. Same thing with a rematch with Bernard, he wanted no fight where he had even the slightest chance of losing. That's why he picked John Ruiz, the worse freaking boxer on the planet.
