Would these outcomes have been different if the losing opponent came in with a different strategy? Hearns-Duran I've heard some say that if Duran "bullrushed" Hearns the way Hagler did, he would have found his chin first. Hagler-Hearns I've heard it said that if Hearns came in to outbox Hagler instead of trying to knock out the adamantium-chinned warrior he would have achieved it with relative ease. Do y'all agree? Can you think of other examples where a change in strategy from the losing fighter would have changed the result. Remember, many rematch victories over the years proves that a loss could merely have been the result of bad strategy and not that a fighter cannot beat his opponent....Patterson-Ingo 2 for example.....
Hearns - Duran. No chance. Had Duran gone for survival, he could have stayed in there but he had no chance of winning that one. Hearns would have outboxed Hagler early but Hagler would have chopped him down eventually. I think the come-from behind 1-punch KOs are the easiest example
Agreed. Tommy may have lasted longer but Hagler was going to keep bringing it to him and would have got Hearns out of there at one point or another.
Its hard to really say typically fighters fight they way they do because....well...thats how they fight So to ask some one to fight differently in most cases is a stretch, because its going away from what people commonly do For example look at boxers who change styles after a loss to to re-invent their careers, how many times have you guys honestly seen this work
Hearns didn't CHOOSE to trade with Hagler. Hagler swarmed him and left no option. Hearns didn't have physical strength or legs to do anything different. Regarding Duran-Hearns, I think Tommy was going to keep his range and find Duran eventually regardless of Duran's game plan. Duran was never a mad bomber that was going to charge Hearns and start unloading.
We know what happens here...no different than Foreman vs Frazier II. Frazier moved around and tried to stay away from George...simply delayed the execution until the fifth or sixth round.
Hearns didn't really have much of a choice, with Hagler turning into an aggressive mauler for this fight and being all over him. Hearns did try to get some distance mid-way through the first, but Hagler cut him off and got him on the ropes. From the 2nd round on, Hearns fought more fleet-footed, but Hagler kept getting to him.
i think the first DLH - Mosley fight would have been different if DLH wasn't trying to walk him down and trade throughout the entire fight
no clue, that was off the top of the head he said something similar? my days of posting may be numbered :(
John Ruiz made it work. Up til the Tua fight he was a boxer type who tried to use movement and jab but he remained very average. Then he invented his clinching, rushing style and became a long-time contender
Wink would have beat Vargas had he simply fought his usual style of mixing boxing in with his arm defense. Instead for some reason (quite possibly his first big fight on HBO) he chose to stand in the pocket and just trade with Vargas. On the other hand he probably would have gotten robbed either way, not that I'm saying he did get robbed.
If Dawson had thrown more than 3 left hands in 11 rounds he would have beaten Pascal easily. Judging by Steward's commentary and his talk since he started training Dawson (basically agreeing with that) i expect Dawson to win by decisive mid round stoppage in the rematch.
