Other than Pulp Fiction, this has to be the best Samuel L movie. One of the better all time "hood" movies, and DEFINITELY the best school based hood movie.

    8.5/10

It absolutely OBLITERATES the more popular, "Dangerous Minds".

I disagree that it's the best hood school movie, i also disagree it's Jackson second best role.

    A Time to Kill
    Jackie Brown
    Unbreakable
    Black Snake Moan
    Rules of Engagement

    Were all better performances.

Agree with your disagree and would like to throw in that 187 is an okay although overrated movie that gets overrated because it's considered so underrated.

    No Doubt...

U Really FEEL the "Pain" of Inner City School Teachers...& We See Samuel L's Character Actually PROGRESS Into the Vengeful Man he Becomes...

REED Agrees that it's Best Contemporary SCHOOL "Hood" Flick...

Michelle Pfieffer teaches poor kids in an inner city school.

Sam Jackson goes to war with kids in an inner city school.

I like 187 better myself, but they are not similar. A better comparison would be "The Principal".

The principal is much better than 187

The Principal is the one with Jim Belushi, right? Not some remake in recent years?

    If so, then... just, no.

187 was a damn good movie. I just caught it the other night on one of the HBO's and forgot how good (and underrated) it is.

I don't disagree with you that he's had better roles, though not sure of the list you posted. But for what it's worth I thought he was better in Jungle Fever than in 187.

if im not mistaken the movie 187 takes place in the valley, north hollywood i believe. hardly a hood movie.

his five minutes in Jungle fever is very little. And I just thought 187 was over the top. the motherfucker was crazy. He shot himself in the fucking head like an idiot. I didnt even get the point of it. In watching it, it looks straight to video to me.

I always thought the substitute was pretty good too.

Dangerous Minds is well done movie tho. It's probably the best out of the bunch.

Is that the one with Tom Berenger? if so, I admit I liked that one as well. Way over the top, of course and to be taken for what it was, but a guilty pleasure nevertheless.

I never liked Dangerous Minds, or Coolio's version of Gangster Paradise.

Sub is over the top but not 187? 187 had kids raping girls while teachers watched. Even the teachers had a turn.

Yes, Samuel L's Character WAS Crazy, but he was DRIVEN to that Extreme...

All he EVER Wanted to Do was TEACH & Make a POSITIVE Impact on Lives, but the School's that he Taught In (& the Students) just WOULDN'T Allow that to Happen...From the Moment Samuel L's Character Started Seeking Retribution Against his Students, he was OBVIOUSLY Crazy...

The Game of Russian Roulette was Samuel L's Way of CALLING the Gangbanger's Bluff...He Even Got the Gangbanger to ADMIT that Macho Pride was Basically ALL he had in Life...Ultimately, Samuel L "Won" by Getting the Gangbanger to OFF Himself, Thus the whole "Pyrrhic Victory" Angle...

It All Made Sense w/the Trajectory of the Story Line...

He was too open about it. And the fact that is going around carying a gun was strange too. Samuel L Jackson was a murderer more than a teacher. It just all seemed a bit too much.

btw, Stand and Deliver and Lean on me were both great high school movies. Both true stories too. I heard Freedom Writers was good, but haven't seen it.

  22. Better than....

    The Negotiator

    I think not! :nono:

One I always liked was Higher Learning. It also came out around the same time (2 years earlier), though it was a college setting, not high school.

the only thing good about the movie was Jackson and even that couldn't save it.

Yeah that was a fun movie. It has a fun lesbo scene with Connelly too. This was durring the time period where Hollywood was trying to make Omar Epps into the next Denzel. That experiment failed.

Yeah i liked the Principal. It started off Cheesy, but then got serious quick. And Louis Gossit's role was very good.
