I dunno about that. Whitaker did win a belt at 140, and I feel like Whitaker outboxes Pryor. I think the 140 Benitez probably beats Pryor as well. Hell, Jose Napoles fought at 140 for awhile, and was really a natural junior welter. Napoles beats Pryor. To be quite honest, I'm not sure if Pryor beats Cervantes if he had ran into the Kid Pambele of 6 years earlier.
The 3 time champ would certainly have something to say about that He won a title at WELTERweight, also. Something Pryor failed to accomplish
If Juan Urango, and Hurtado could get off the canvas to batter Bailey, then yeah, I'd venture to say Aaron Pryor would as well.
It's possible, but Cervantes had two feet in the grave when he fought Pryor. The Cervantes of 74-75 was a completely different animal than the shot version Pryor beat. The Cervantes that destroyed Peppermint Fraser and batter DeJesus would have had a very good chance of beating Pryor.
Two names are Wilfred Benitez and Niccolino Locche. Aaron would have eaten a ton of leather and Benitez could beat him inside. We will never know.
Also Chavez as well. That would have been brutal with Aaron coming in squared up the middle like that.
On paper one of the best mythical matchups to be made in my opinion. Regardless of who wins it seems almost impossible that it's not a classic.
Theres a couple of guys I would pick over Chavez at 140. Pryor, Benitez, Floyd, Pac, Cervantes, Napoles. 140 was not JCC's best weight.
So many different styles and variables. I think you can make a good argument for and against Chavez in each. I don't believe he goes 0-5 though.
Chavez would eat Pryor’s asshole alive. Pryor is the most overrated “Wide world of Sports” era fighter I’ve seen. He did himself a service by being a junky and fucking up his career before someone knocked him out and dispelled the myth.
Ahhhh Terp, the forever Pryor hater. If someone wants to make a case for Chavez beating Pryor, I have no problem with it. A strong case can be made for Chavez. But Chavez "eating Pryor's asshole alive (I would think that'd more up Donald Curry's alley, but I digress) just isn't happening. Far lesser fighters than Pryor gave Chavez trouble. I think Duran would beat up Pryor, but Pryor would give Chavez a lot of problems.
Pryor threw wild combos squared up infront of his opponent with his chin in the air. An agile, sharp puncher like Chavez would punish him consistently in exchanges and Pryor doesn’t have the boxing skills to move and outwork him like he did plodding, rigid Arguello. Chavez would’ve beaten him up and exposed him. Aaron Pryor was a popular action fighter who fucked up his career right after his career defining wins over a smaller older guy, and that’s what made him a legend.
