A day late, but Shane Mosley officially retired yesterday.

Easily a first ballot HOFmer in 5 years, but beyond that, give your opinion of his legacy.

  2. Solid fighter, must give him major credit for first win over Oscar ( I thought he lost the re). Titles in 3 divisions.

Brave guy with a solid chin. Always exciting. Overrated though in that people pegged him as multi-dimensional when in fact he was really a stylized slugger.

He's also lucky Mamadou Thiam never got his hands on him.

His defeats to Forrest obviously hurt his legacy since they were fairly comprehensive (especially the first). Wright too. But he deserves credit for taking those guys on at a time when nobody wanted to face either one. Was also really disappointed with his performance against PBF. Just kept doing the same shit over again and it was not working.

Too bad he did not face better comp at 135. I think there he could have really established historic greatness.

Still, wins over ODH, Vargas, Margarito and Mayorga make for a distinguished career.

From what I recall, at 135, Mosley wanted to fight Stevie Johnston. But it was Stevie who wasn't in a rush to fight Mosley.

Yeah. I am sure he was willing to fight anyone there.

He was good, and was in some great fights, but I was never a massive fan personally and I think he is one of the most overrated fighters of the past generation. There are just too many occasions where he couldn't adapt or find a plan b when things were going wrong and he'd just end up getting beaten comfortably. I rate him as an excellent, world class fighter but I've never seen him as an all-time great.

If Mayweather jr, cotto and pacquiao retire as well this year then who gets in first ballot? I believe only 3 modern fighters can go in during 1 class. that would mean those four plus wald pussy all become eligible the same year. who gets in as the third member out of mosley, cotto or wald pussy?

Not Only That, but it was Usually Apparent Fairly EARLY, Shane Needed to Do SOMETHING Different...Yet he Didn't (or Couldn't)...

If You Watch Ammy Footage of Shane, it Isn't Much Different than Watching him as a Pro, Stylistically Speaking...There was No MATURATION to his Game...

Thing is, Jack Mosley was a "Boxing Coach", Instead of a "TRAINER"...He Could Get and Keep Shane in Shape, but he Couldn't TRAIN or TEACH Shane New Shit...And by the Time Shane Started Switching Up Chief 2nd's, it was Already Toooooooooooooooo LATE...

All That Being Said, Shane had an Admirable Career...He was a FUN, Semi-Mainstream Fighter Who Sought the BIGGEST Names, NEVER Ducked Anyone (Even When it Probably Would've Made More Sense/Cents) and Had Some Memorable KO's...

And in a Sport Full of SHITTY Motherfuckers, Shane was a Genuinely GOOD Dude...

Shane definitely didn't have great ring IQ for a HOF fighter.

I remember fairly recently, Shane had Duran training him in the gym... Duran was trying to show Shane some of his (Duran's) masterful moves, but you could tell Shane just didn't "get it".

Must have been frustrating for Duran, a guy with an off the charts ring IQ, trying to explain things to a guy who simply doesn't comprehend the sweet science as well.

Don't get me wrong, not saying Shane had a LOW ring IQ like Khan or Andre Berto, but it was a mediocre for an ELITE guy.

I would think so, he hasn't fought in 6 years.

The ONLY former great who has yet to get the retirement message, SADLY... is Roy Levesta Jones Jr.

I would never have thought that Roy Jones would be the one fighting for so many years after being over the hill.

Are you serious? The same static Thiam that turned into a punching bag for three rounds against Trinidad?

The thing I remember most about Shane is the right hand Vernon Forrest landed on him. That was one of the hardest punches I have ever seen.

The first one set up the uppercut. Shane had no idea where he was at.

Always loved these two great performances, tje first being one of the best performances of the 2000s, the latter of which was an epic beatdown.

  26. Mosley is the single most overrated fighter of the 00s

Yeah he didn't see that coming. The fight could have been stopped easily in Rd 2 towards the end, Nady would have stopped it for sure.

  28. Speedy slugger with some cute but meaningless antics. The antics fooled people into thinking he was a slick boxer. Very tough though and lots of heart. Great body punching ability and an exciting fighter

He was a good fighter but definitely the most overrated of my lifetime... before Forrest embarrassed him, he was elevated to p4p #1 status and people compared him to the GOAT, based off of one big win against DLH and an un-unified (when that was still realistic) championship reign as an oversized lightweight with mediocre opposition

Later fights revealed a tendency to resign himself to decision losses when faced with adversity

On the plus side, very strong, good puncher, very fast hands and had some good wins... he easily exceeds the IBHOF's poor standards

  30. That flat nosed green eyed motherfucker always gave it his all though. Very exciting fighter.
