" I've judged both fighters and Marquez's fights are usually easier to score than Casamayor. Marquez is a straight ahead fighter who stalks his opponent and scores sharp punches. Casamayor is one of the slickest boxers in today's game and he relies on very quick counter punching and defense. "

What a knob, he makes Marquez sound like a brawler

And today's Casa is hardly the slickest boxer in the game, he's just a dirty little spoiling bastard, almost like a mini southpaw version of Nard. And Marquez is the better technician, and better boxer, not the straight ahead stalker that this bellend describes.

Where do they find these donuts to write these "articles"?

Don't mock, MWS- this bright spark is apparently the author of "a boxing murder mystery series", so I'm sure that we all argee that he's extremely well qualified to venture forth his t'penniworth...

Yeah since this post I read he is a judge

Fucking hell, no wonder so many scores are absurd, half of it probably isn't even underhand, just morons scoring fights

Well, to be fair, Marquez IS much more straight-ahead these days than he used to be, except when needing to adjust (i.e.; Pacquiao II) - and even then he is showing more aggression.

The precision-punching part I see no problems agreeing with.

My beef was with the REST of the article...read it carefully and you'll see he's refering to the fight as a whole or what happens "over the course of the fight" and idiocy like "who's doing the most damage?" - when a fight is actually score ROUND BY ROUND.

This is EXACTLY why so many fans don't score well or simply score based on "impressions" or say fighter X won, but don't really score the rounds.

Schreck criticizes judges for scoring on 'impression' (who is "going forward" for example) - then falls prey to the EXACT same thing later in the article by introducing all of these intangibles over the 'course of the fight' later on.

    Peace.

I actually thought it was one of the saner explanations of how to score a fight I've heard from a judge. 'Whoever put more hurt on the other guy that round, that's who won' is basically all he's saying which is absolutely correct. Most judges are up their own pretentious arses trying to justify their cushy number by convincing us all that they're somehow better qualified to judge a fight than any of the rest of us. 'Effective aggression this' ,'ring generalship that' blah blah, blah. Total abstractions. It's reminds me of the university academics who write up something a 8 year old child could understand in such convoluted jargon that it takes you ten minutes to read each page. It's all to help justify their position.

Which fighter landed the more damaging punches that round? That guy won the round. I don't care who was going forwards or backwards or sidey ways or spinning in a circle on one leg making red indian noises, whoever puts the more hurt on the other guy wins the round. That's what this guys seems to be saying and I agree with him 100%.

As for Marquez being a pressure fighter....I think we all expected him to take the lead in this fight, that's probably all the guy meant.

No he described him in general, as if he was a standard come forward Mexican fighter, like Marge. It's as if he'd never seen him fight before.

And to be honest, I don't think many people thought Marquez would be the aggressor, because he almost never is. Sure he'll engage you, but he's a boxer and counter puncher by nature, and he forced Casamayor to come to him, just like he does with most of his opponents.

Yeah fair enough, I see your point....it's just that the article wasn't about really about Marquez-Casa though, it was about the scoring of fights where one guy is markedly more aggressive than than the other guy. I think he was just over emphasizing the expected dichotomy between their styles so he could use them as an illustration of his general point. And as I said, going into this fight, I do think we expected Marquez to be the guy on the front foot, more so than Casa. Maybe I'm giving him too much credit though....

What about a guy who throws more scoring points but takes more damage from 1 or 2 shots...Your attempt to make boxing scoring some black and white thing is bullshit. There are grey areas whether you like it or not.
