This one has been getting superb reviews.

I'm taking off from work next week, might actually cough up a few bucks to see it in theatres solo.

  2. Youtube clip, you lazy bastard?

It has nothing to do w/cost. I'm sure the B&W approach was very intentional.

It's by the same guy who made The Witch - which was made in color and beautifully shot.

We were all wrong about Robert Pattinson.

After Twilight, he acquired the rep of being a wooden/shit actor.

Turns out the guy is actually quite good.

I’d been hearing big things about this film way back in August and I was waiting for the trailer to drop so I could post it here. When it finally came out I was so underwhelmed by it that I said fuck it. Film looks boring as shit.

    Saw it today.

Good movie. Powerhouse performance by Dafoe. Pattinson was very good as well.

I wouldn't call it a great movie, but definitely worth seeing.

Black & White is an art in itself. Today is more difficult to film in that medium than in color. I personally get upset when people refuse to watch a great film just because is in black & white or 'old'. I much prefer to watch a slow paced B&W 'The Magnificent Ambersons" than the noisy retarded colorful "Hobbs & Shaw" or whatever is the name of that new action film.

  17. ´The Lighthouse has received universal acclaim, with critics highlighting the technical aspects (notably the cinematography and production design), Eggers' screenplay and direction, and the performances of Dafoe and Pattinson.´

In other words, the same critics who loved Roma, because of the technical aspects (notably the cinematography and production design).

The acting of Dafoe and Pattinson are really the highlight of the film.

  19. Really?

Sounds like a great idea for a play or theater production, then.

You only like Dafoe because he was out-acted by Hackman in Mississippi Burning.

  24. This weird Gene Hackman fascination.

    Never saw BOF.

Looked it up. Holy God - how do you manage to get an 8% on RT?

On a serious note, Dafoe was really good in To Live and Die in LA.

Make an erotic thriller with a leading lady who can't act?

Dafoe is a terrific actor, he's always fun to watch

Saw this last night. Performances were great, cinematography was great, framing was great. The black & white was a great touch.

That said, not sure what the point of it was.

This director Eggers, seems to be really fucking good at portraying a sort of stark realism of the times in his work. Evidenced by this and "The Witch". I would never want to live in ANY time period as this guy envisions it.

That said, I'm not sure I'm supposed to actually care about any of his characters, so there's really not a sense of tension. "Dread" sure, plenty of that.....but not a lot of tension, or general care for what happens next.

I couldn't wait for Pattinson and Dafoe to fucking kill each other, and I didn't care which one went first.

So, interesting movie, I won't ever watch again. I'll look forward to the directors next project, because there's tons of potential there.

BTW, if you've always had a fantasy of watching Robert Pattinson furiously and violently jerk off to a tiny mermaid sculpture, multitudes of times in the same movie............well then, I've got great news for you.

Had the same reaction... incredible looking film and awesome performances (Dafoe is consistently awesome every movie) but it’s 90% aesthetics

  30. Yeah, so this, above, then.
