I am not a horror fan, at least not of those slasher films that now pass as horror films. I like old school horror films where plot, acting and atmosphere with small doses of creepines makes a perfect combination for a fun scare ride. Like the old Hammer films. Wake Wood is that kind of film and ironically it was produced by the new Hammer. The plot revolves about a veterinarian and his pharmacist wife coping with the tragic death of their only daughter. They decide to move to a small irish town to restart their lives, but soon discover a pagan ritual that can bring back from the dead their daughter for only three days. There are certain rules for this, but of course, they will ignore them with the expected horrific results. While this can be seen as a Pet Sematary rip-off, it is executed fresh enough to remind me more of the pagan community of the original The Wicker Man than Stephen King. While not really scary, it has some disturbing scenes and the climax was really good. 7/10
