What is the oldest fighter you can think of to become a proper name on the world stage? Martinez seems like the best example to me. Really became a name on the world stage in his mid 30's, I can't think of anyone who established themselves as an elite fighter older than that, especially someone who most people hadn't even heard of before.
Keeping with the Argentina theme, you could include Carlos Baldomir...he was 34 or so when he beat Judah.
Glen Johnson Backed up his upset KO of Jones with a close win over Tarver. Rarely a favorite but as live as dog as it gets no matter who he fights.
Jersey Joe Walcott at 33 made his name by dropping Joe Louis twice and, in the eyes of many (including Louis who was leaving the ring before the decision thinking he had lost and apologized to Walcott after it was announced) deserved the decision. Walcott then went on the KO Ezzard Charles for the heavyweight title at age 37.
Not sure he ever really "arrived", but by the time Michael Bennett hit the pros he was, I believe, in his 30s.
Glen Johnson is the best example I can think of. Hell, he was an underdog to Daniel freakin' Judah at one point.
Corrie Sanders was I believe 36 or 37 y/o and semi-retired when he knocked out Wlad. Before - and arguably after - that, he was one of the worst-managed good fighters in heavyweight history.
Can you include Grady Brewer in this topic for when he competed on The Contender? Not exactly an arrival to world champion or p4p status, but it was into notoriety. Not sure what to become a proper name means.
I wonder if Archie Moore qualifies for this list? He was ducked, dodged and screwed over before finally beating Joey Maxim in '52, days before his 36th birthday.
