Under-used techniques...

    What technique(s) do you feel boxers in general could benefit from doing more of?

    Are there things old-time boxers used to do more of that for some reason contemporary boxers have moved away from?

    I think boxers should focus on hitting opponents straight in the chest more than they do.

    I also think boxers, in general, don't throw the double jab often enough.

    Not thinking about particular fighters, but the sport as a whole.

    I think there's a move away from learning proper head movement, especially subtle things like rolls and fades in favout of just saying 'LOOK JUDGES I'M BLOCKING, I'M BLOCKING!'. which has obvious major draw backs. Very few fighters seem to be really able to fight on the inside anymore, too.

    Have I mentioned before I don't really like modern Amateur boxing.....probably mentioned it at some point.

    In-fighting seems to be a lost art nowadays. None of these prospects know how to do shit inside except clinch.

    They're all flashy, and taught how to "box". But few of them actually know how to FIGHT.

    I agree. And I think it's one reason we as fans are so blown away by fights like Corrales/Castillo and Vazquez/Marquez.

    Besides a lot of back and forth action, in those fights we got to see two fighters willing to stand inside and rely on their skills, rather than clinch and fight scared.

    A perfect example of the kind of fighter we could all do without is Andre Berto.

    Yeah really. Why don't more fighters do this? Did they used to do this more often in the past? Or are you simply pointing out that fighters should do it more often?

    One of the reasons Trinidad was able to have so much offensive success against Whitaker was his use of the fore-arm to prevent Whitaker from holding and hitting him. Whitaker was forced to fight Trinidad (as opposed to hold him) and as a result he got his ass kicked.

    I don't think it was user more in the past, it's just individual fighters.

    Mayweather did it occasionally against Hatton.

    It's a good technique to use against swarmers. Everybody who ever fought Ruiz should have done it.

    Neil, why don't you include in your quote the fact it was a P4P discussion about Castillo vs. Hearns?

    Also, I've never criticized PBF for using his forearm. What PBF does in the ring is about the only thing he doesn't deserve criticism for. Now. If you want to talk about "who" he fights? And at what weight-class? And his behaviour outside the ring? His embarrassing level of ignorance and lack of class? His anti-social personality? The likelihood he will end up in prison? Then you got me. I'm critical.

    Something as simple as parrying the jab, for fighters with shorter reaches. By parrying a boxer with a longer reach, you can take as much as 8"-12" off of their reach if you parry properly, while at the same time, stepping into your own counter jab.

    Works like a charm.

    Also, hitting on the hips to slow down the runners/movers. I know someone may talk about about the risk of breaking ones hand or knuckle; but with the way groin protecters work, you can still bang and be effective while not hurting your hands as much.
