Agreed. I get into loads of arguments about this film. Moreso than any other.

Every time I see that movie listed, I always think of that Seinfeld episode (which I think was even titled "The English Patient").

But yeah, I agree... pretty much with all of your choices, with the exception of Up In Smoke, the only Cheech and Chong movie I liked (in fact, loved).

I think Hangover and Lebowski are both movies that were better to have seen before the hype.

I think Lebowski is a classic.

The Hangover is more of just a movie with some very quotable lines...and an absurd role plaid by Ken Jeong that makes the second half of the movie hard to sit through.

I liked it too, laughed a lot the first time I saw it...thought there were a lot of good quotes in it.

But I didn't wait that long to see it, and just think it's one of those ones where if you don't go see it in the theater and just wait however many months for it to come out on dvd and all you do is hear about how funny it is, you're setting up yourself up to have a negative reaction to it.

Not saying that's what happened here, but so many of the reviews and movie opinions on this forum seem way too based on expectations.

Regarding Jeong, though...I hated the character and just think it should not have been in the movie.

    agREED on both.

I loved The Big Lebowski, but have actually been cursed out by people for recommending it. Seems like the type of movie you just have to watch, rather than be told/recommended to watch.

I didn't care for The Hangover and perhaps due to the very same thing I just referenced about TBL - so many people telling me I HAVE to see it, that it shits on Tropic Thunder (not in a million fuckin' years), etc. It was OK, and I laughed at a few parts, but never watched the entire movie in one sitting and have no desire to.

The movie previews to begin Tropic Thunder alone were worth the price of admission.

    Great film.

Lebowski is one of the most divisive movies I've come across. You almost can't even recommend it. You just sorta have to be around other people who enjoy it as much as you do to talk about it.

I honestly expected to hate Tropic Thunder but that's a movie I can watch over and over and laugh every time I see it. Far more quotable than The Hangover as far as I'm concerned.

Not seen that yet, but out of the movies you listed i could perhaps give you Withnail (bearable on first viewing only). The rest are stupidly overrated.

    IMO

David Lynch movies in general, especially the more recent ones.

LOL. I was almost going mention right after Lebowski that David Lynch movies are the next in line as far as love/hate.

For the most part, I like them.

It's true what people say about Hangover. Namely the fact that a lot don't like it because it got so much hype and expectations were so high. I read this in this book about comedy writing. Try it yourselves. Pick a joke and tell a friend that this joke is soooo bad and say it to them. They will say it wasn't all bad. But if you take the same joke and say it's the funniest thing ever and then say it they will not like it.
