Seeing how his stand up is much superior to Shields will he just keep it standing? I don't think Shields can take GSP down so GSP would just box his ears off and keep it on feet away from the ground and Shield's subs.

Absolutely. He even said in a recent interview that he is going to go "back to his roots"

but even in the beginning, GSP was probably a better grappler than striker. I rebemebr him outgrappling Justin bruckmen (sp?) in his 2nd fight who was a pretty good drappler and much more experienced. And in his fight with dangerous striker such as Pete Spratt, he took the fight immediately to the ground

It doesnt matter what he wants. Shields is going to take him down. Not saying shields will win, but this fight will be a ground war. At least that's what i think.

Yeah, who said Shields wouldn't be able to take GSP down? Shields will get it to the ground.

The thing that makes this fight interesting for me is that GSP has superior boxing but he doesn't have that fight-ending one punching power like Henderson. GSP will methodically beat you down with strikes like he did with Kos and Fitch.

That will give Shields opportunities to get it to the mat.

But unlike the wrestlers that GSP has faced, Shields is a guy that won't mind ending up on his back to get it to the ground. He is confident enough in his sweeps and bottom BJJ that he won't be uncomfortable being underneath GSP.

But ultimately I think he will have to extend far too much energy to gain any position advantage. That will cost him as this fight progresses and I can really see GSP doing a number on him late.

There will be some interesting grappling early and it will be fun to watch how it plays out.

I think Shields will get it to the mat.....eventually. I think he his going to have one of the hardest times with just takedowns that he has ever had. I can see this fight going in soooo many different ways. It would not suprise me at all if Shields pulls off a sub. It also would not suprise me at all if GSP hurts Shields and wins by TKO. And if you want to know what I think is going to happen, a chess match with very little risk. And we will all be complaining about what a snoozer it was.

I really think Shields is Taylor made for GSP. I see him having a very difficult time taking GSP down and GSP picking him apart in the standup. Shields striking is one of the worst in MMA.

Agreed. GSP's take down defense is second to none. A lot are pointing to the Henderson fight as evidence that Shields can take down GSP. Henderson doesn't have TDD anywhere near the same realm as GSP.

Shields' cardio will also be a question mark in this fight. Sure, maybe his weight cut against Kampmann was poor, but if he shows up against GSP in that kind of shape he doesn't stand a chance.

Not even close to the worst in MMA, more like the worst for an elite fighter.

I think that is what Bob meant Z, I don't really think he was comparing Shields to the local fighter with the 8 and 22 win/loss record. Just a guess though.:giggle:

Wouldn't you think Shield's striking would improve just because of the guys at his gym?

Seriously, both Diaz brothers and Gilbert Melendez have really improved their striking over the years while I really haven't seen the same from Jake. You would think, with the devotion to boxing that Nick Diaz has, that Shields would have some improvement rub off just through association.

So what are you saying? It doesn't seem to be improving a bit to me.

The Diaz brothers can't wrestle, Shields can't strike. What exactly are they doing over at Caesar Gracie MMA?

I get the sarcasm, but what about Melendez? He trains in a gym with possibly the best BJJ grappler in MMA and has one submission win in his career.

You would figure rolling with Shields and the Diaz brothers would make you some what proficient in BJJ.

I guess he is a brown belt which actually means something under Cesar Gracie, but he doesn't really show it much. But I will admit I've only seen 8-10 of his fights.

correct me if I'm wrong though, isn't Gilbert a wrestler? I think he has very adequate stand up too. You are right, he definitely doesn't really go for the sub.

Yeah and that's what confuses me about that gym.

They have a good wrestlers. They have a decent boxer. They have a great BJJ guy and a couple very good ones. Yet none seem to have it all.

What is this, 1994? Fighters (should) train multiple disciplines these days.

    This is it, exactly.

I would say Nick Diaz is about as well rounded as anyone in MMA today. Besides him though, yeah, I agree.

Well, you know I'm a huge Nick Diaz fan but his wrestling is terrible. I don't think it matters much because few people would relish being in his guard.
