Anderson Silva: UFC superfight with Georges St-Pierre "must happen someday"

by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Apr 23, 2011 at 2:50 pm ET
[IMG]Jake Shields and Yushin Okami might not agree, but UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva believes a superfight with welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre lies on the horizon.

Silva shared his thoughts on the long-rumored superfight with Mike Straka on this week's new episode of HDNet's "Fighting Words with Mike Straka."

"Georges St-Pierre is one of the best," Silva said through an interpreter. "He's shown that he's a great athlete, and I really train hard everyday to fight the best. I do believe it's a superfight, and it's a fight that must happen someday."

It's a fight fans have clamored for in recent years. Widely considered the two best pound-for-pound fighters on the planet, Silva and St-Pierre have dominated their respective divisions for years. Initially, UFC president Dana White seemed uninterested in promoting the superfight, but as fan interest snowballed, his position began to change.

Still, White continues to refer to the potential matchup as a "fantasy fight." After all, St-Pierre first needs to beat Shields at this month's UFC 129 event – then the Canadian superstar needs to start packing on muscle in his move up to the middleweight division.

Of course, Silva has a little work left, as well. The Brazilian was recently announced as the headliner for August's UFC 134 event, where he'll meet the last man to earn a victory against him, Yushin Okami.

Okami's victory cam via disqualification in a 2006 Rumble on the Rock contest, and Silva has suggested he thinks the Japanese grappler took the easy way out after being struck with an illegal upkick.

Nevertheless, he's not seeking revenge in the fight. Instead, to borrow a line from his boss, it's just "business as usual."

"I really have no interest in getting revenge against Yushin Okami," Silva said. "We already fought. He lost. He got knocked out. Let's move on.

"But really, I'm in here to fight the best, and if he's credentialed to fight me, and he's up there to get a title shot, then he deserves it, and we've got to do it."

If the Shields and Okami hurdles can be cleared, there would be little in the way of a Silva vs. St-Pierre showdown. St-Pierre has hinted that he's not entirely committed to a move up in weight, and Jon Jones' recent performances have left some fans suggesting he should be the man to challenge "The Spider."

But for Silva, a historic contest with his fellow UFC champion seems an inevitability.

"It really is a great superfight," Silva said. "I'm just happy that I know people are looking forward to watching this. I think this fight will make the fans happy. It's something they've been waiting for, and Georges St-Pierre is one of the best.

"I'll be very happy to give this pleasure to all my fans."

He should be talking about proving himself against the top LHW's, not against the best Welter.

Would you say GSP should be proving himself against the Top Middleweights?

If not, why is Silva held to a different standard?

Because he has already fought at 205 against a contender and middleweight is garbage.

Well, if GSP beats Shields, you will have two champions that have basically cleaned out their own divisions. Unless of course you want to see GSP recycle opponents like Fitch, Koscheck, Penn, or Alves.

In all honesty, the best fight for either guy is against each other.

I love the idea of Jon Jones versus Silva but at this point it's not near as interesting as GSP-Silva. Hell, both guys have their divisions locked down. So the obvious fight is against each other.

Now with Jones at the top at 205, there are so many matchups there its unreal. Jones has really not fought any top contenders at 205 but yet holds the belt. Line em up.

In the meanwhile, its a perfect oppurtunity for Dana to make the fight between GSP and Silva. Regardless of what the nay sayers want to critique, this fight will draw huge and the majority of fans want to see it, a small minority will criticize it. After the fight you can let the dust settle and see who's up. Possibly Miller, see where Stann lies, etc. Its a win win for the UFC and fans alike.:cheer:

Silva will beat the grease off GSP. There isnt a fighter that GSP has even sparred with that will bring what Silva will bring. Silva will show how limited GSP really is.

Ummmmm......thats the whole point of sparring. You bring in talented bodies that know the sport well enough to give you decent looks and angles NOT somebody that is p4p top 5 and will injure you in training. Of course he's never sparred with A Silva caliber talent.

205 is the most exciting division, Anderson could move up there and would be good for 3 main events a year in that division.

Anderson wants GSP because it's a big fight and an easy one. I give him NO credit for taking that fight, if it comes off.

GSP could go up to 185 (without Anderson) and that division immediately becomes interesting and relevant.

Welter would be interesting without GSP with all of them scrambling to get the vacant belt.

So you want GSP to move up to 185 without Silva there? Didn't you say MW is garbage.

So basically you're saying Silva should move up and take difficult fights at 205 while GSP should move to 170 and fight garbage with Silva gone.

OK, I will leave this discussion now.
