Oh boy.. I guess this means we won't get GSP-Diaz anytime soon. I think Zuffa is making a huge mistake not letting Nick fight GSP sooner rather than later. http://www.mmamania.com/2011/5/6/21...-fight-nick-diaz-in-boxing-match-in-late-2011
I sure hope Dana offers Diaz a meaningfull fight so this isn't made. With Diaz toughess, he's gonna take a fearsome beating before going down, the kind of beating that changes a fighter forerver, and while Lacy is a far cry from the beast he used to be ( not that he was great or anything, but he was a tough big punching guy with good workrate ), I still think he got enough in him to whip Diaz.
Wow, as a Diaz fan this is stupid. Lacy is TOTALLY shot, but I think the gulf between boxing in um, boxing and MMA is big enough that Lacy wins this. Diaz would have been much better off gunning for GSP, and would have surely got more money too?
If he gets big money for Lacy, it's freak show money and nothing else. I maybe dumb enough to think Nick's work rate and chin could carry him to a win in this one. It's not that I think THAT highly of Nick's boxing, but I've seen Lacy's last couple performances and I could beat him. Nevertheless, it's a lose-lose for the UFC. If Nick wins, he likely looks for another boxing match. If Nick loses, the UFC most legitimate challenger for GSP's belt got beat by a washed-up boxer.
Never seen Diaz fight, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear about anyone beating Jeff Lacy these days. Like Trplsec, I think I'd beat Lacy.
I read that Diaz was looking at Lacy, Vargas or Mayorga....i guess he thinks Lacy is the safest bet...
So this is a straight up boxing match? Shit I´d rather be it MMA. Lacy is so fucked up he might manage to lose that, too. It´s a smart business move though. If Lacy wins, Diaz will get an MMA rematch. Lacy might get around 150-250k for that, when the max in boxing these days is probably 20-25k.
I didn't realise the guy that beat Lacy in his most recent fight has lost 20 and has a KO % of 7 :: I haven't seen the fight. Did Lacy look even worse than against Jones? Wow, maybe Diaz really can beat Lacy now.
Look for Dana White and Zuffa to remind Nick that they own that ass now. I will be stunned if this fight is allowed.
Given Vargas' weight and health problems id say that he is the safest bet. Props for Diaz for doing this.
His Strikeforce contract allows him to participate in pro boxing. It will be interesting to see what happens.
Unless Bout with St. Pierre Materializes Soon, Diaz Will Box Lacy in the Fall Boxer Jeff Lacy has signed a contract to square off against Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz in the boxing ring this fall, but Diaz's participation could be dependent on what Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC, decides to do about his immediate future in MMA. While boxing promoter Don Chargin told MMA Fighting on Friday that both Diaz and Lacy have signed bout agreements to face one another in a boxing match later this year, Diaz's manager, Cesar Gracie, said Diaz has a contract with Chargin, but has yet to sign a specific bout agreement for this fight. "Nick has a signed contract but is waiting to sign an actual bout agreement," Gracie wrote in a text message on Friday afternoon. "We are only waiting to see if Zuffa is serious about a Diaz-GSP fight." Boxing promoter Chargin, however, sees it slightly differently. "They have [signed a bout agreement,]" he told MMA Fighting. "They can say whatever they want, but we're going to a lot of trouble if we don't have it signed." Diaz was discussed as a potential opponent for UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre after St. Pierre defeated Diaz's friend and training partner, Jake Shields, via unanimous decision at UFC 129 last Saturday. Diaz is currently under contract with Strikeforce, which is now owned by Zuffa, but the contract he signed before the Zuffa purchase has a clause that allows him to box outside the MMA organization. When asked whether a Diaz-GSP fight would be feasible under the current contractual situation, UFC president Dana White didn't rule it out. "I imagine I could do whatever I wanted to do if I really wanted," White said following UFC 129 in Toronto. "But we have a contract with Showtime, and he's a Strikeforce fighter. We'll see how it works out, but that's an interesting fight." White said he would be sitting down to talk with Diaz about his future plans, but he may not be the only promoter with that idea in mind. Chargin also said he'd be making the trip to see Diaz "in the next couple weeks" and would bring a couple of boxers with him to serve as sparring partners in a closed-door session. "I've watched him already. I'm not worried about his boxing skills," Chargin said. "I just want to test him with some good fighters. They're both going to be main event fighters." The former IBF super-middleweight champ Lacy last fought in December of 2010, when he lost a unanimous decision to Dhafir Smith in St. Petersburg, Fla. Before that he suffered a defeat via corner stoppage against Roy Jones Jr. in a NABO light heavyweight title fight in August of 2009. Diaz last fought in April when he successfully defended his Strikeforce welterweight title against Paul Daley with a first-round TKO. It was his tenth consecutive victory, but afterward he again expressed displeasure with his pay and schedule as an MMA fighter, telling Inside MMA, "I don't see much of a future in this sport for me. I honestly don't, especially if there's not a whole sh--load of money going on." Diaz has spoken openly of a move to boxing for the sake of more lucrative paydays, but Chargin said there are as of yet no details on where, when, or at what weight a Diaz-Lacy bout would take place. For their part, Diaz's camp seems to be waiting to see what Zuffa will decide to do with St. Pierre before making any further commitments on a boxing match with Lacy. When asked when they expected to get an answer from the UFC brass on a potential Diaz-GSP fight, Gracie replied, "Hopefully next week."
Oh and before i get jumped on for the silly hobby comment, i wasnt saying boxing is a silly hobby i am saying NIck Diaz trying it is a silly Hobby. A career in boxing will never go anywhere for him, so if he gets a chance to be the champ of his actual profession, he should take it. Its more important.
Yep, pretty much. He's obviously not going to come close to replicating his MMA success in boxing, so a shot at GSP is far more important.
Yep, Diaz has been sparring with Andre Ward since he was 17 and he's shaking in his boots over a potential 4 round bout with Jeff Lacy. OK....
Doesn't matter. The bottom line is Diaz has fought some of the toughest MMA guys in the world. He's sparred with boxing world champions and prospects. He trains with one of the absolute toughest camps in MMA. Yet he's shaking about a potential 4 round bout with one of the most under achieving, washed up boxers ever to lace up a pair of gloves???? You are delusional.
Im not delusional. Firstly he has signed and hes waiting on Lacy then once Lacy signs he tries to get a fight with GSP in MMA. Again training is not the same as a real fight. These boxing champions are not going to be trying to hurt Diaz or knock him out. Your delusional.
See, this is where a guy like you shows how much he talks straight out of his ass. Diaz and his manager were looking for a GSP fight BEFORE Lacy signed anything. That pretty much slams your ridiculous notion.
