<iframe width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/7TYerHJ1Am8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Never heard of him but apparently he was decent in terms of prospects. 10-0 with 8KOs. 24 years old and should be fighting at Lightweight or Featherweight. Got a good camp at least. Interesting to see how it plays out.
Interesting. I wonder what prompted that decision. Never heard of him either, well actually the first I heard of him was from Nick Diaz. BTW does anyone have a link to the vid of him and Nick sparring?
Shit, you're right. And he turned pro at the same time as the Chinky Chinaman Olympics. How weird is that?
Henry, 22 years old of Houston, TX, turned pro to little fanfare after a hand injury forced him out of the 2008 Olympic trials. http://www.boxingscene.com/cotto-clone-omar-henry-turns-down-pacquiao-invitation--22647
From what I've seen, I always thought he looked pretty good. Disappointed he's leaving boxing to be honest. Here's his debut. <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/51f6mOcKTnk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Omar Henry was an ABOVE Average Ammy, but @ NO Point was he even Considered an ELITE Ammy by Texas Standards...He MIGHT have Qualified for the NATIONAL Golden Gloves a Time or 2, but Honestly, he was Always just a "GUY" on the Statewide Scene... Fighters like Charles Hatley & Even Jose Orozco Carried More "Juice", so to Speak.... RINGSIDEMIKE was Henry's Publicist for awhile & Put Tons of Articles & Video Footage of Omar on the Internet...But Apparently, Henry's Gotten FULL of Himself, PISSED OFF Top Rank & Now is Hanging In Limbo...According to RINGSIDEMIKE, this Announcement is just a Publicity Stunt, to Keep Henry's Name "Out There"...In Reality, he's STILL BOUND to a Top Rank Contract & in RINGSIDE's Words, "Top Rank is just Gonna Let him ROT Until his Contract Expires" REED
I was visiting family in Texas and watched him fight in Corpus Christi. I will say he looked great, but it was hard to tell if that was more of the level of competition he was fighting too. I know he helped Diaz train for Paul Daley, and that is obviously why he has ties to Caesar Gracie and their camp. I think you are right though, REED, smells like a publicity stunt more than anything. I just don't see this dude wanting to start all over and train take down defense and such. He is fairly polished as a boxer, he will most likely stay with boxing.
I definitely got the vibe of a lot of arrogance coming from the dude. However, I do slightly recall something I stumbled on where it was said Top Ranked let him go and he was looking at Golden Boy.
http://www.fighthype.com/pages/content9707.html Yep, April 11th. I don't think it was just happenstance either that he announces he's going to MMA after a month of being released from a major boxing promotion. Almost makes me wonder if dude was so off-putting he was essentially "blackballed". Well if he's as arrogant and off putting as I speculate, he'll fit right in with Nick Diaz and co at Cesar Gracie's.
Do you think his style translates better to pro boxing than most amateurs? Do you think he would be/will be a titlist in boxing? Do you think his style translates well to MMA?
Reed's the expert but I've seen 3 of Henry's fights. To me his style seems far more suited for pro boxing. He picks his shots. He has good power and isn't a huge volume puncher. Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware of his Top Rank situation. And with that attitude, it's no wonder he's at home with the Cesar Gracie gang.
In a LIMITED # of Pro Fights, Henry had ALREADY Made More of a Splash than REED Thought he Would, having Seen him as an Ammy... On the Ammy Scene, U DROP EVERYTHING U're Doing to See Certain Guys Fight, Whereas U'll Go to the Concession Stand when Other Guys R Fighting...Perhaps REED just MISSED the Boat ENTIRELY, but as an Ammy, Henry NEVER Made Enough of an Impression on REED to Where REED Would Go Out of his Way to Watch his Fights... REED was SHOCKED when Top Rank Signed him & To their Credit, they Matched him Right...He was Flown Out to Wild Card to Spar w/Pacquiao a Time or 2 & was Featured on a Top Rank Show the Day PRIOR to Pac-Clottey...& he's an INTELLIGENT Guy, so it was SHOCKING that he Burned Bridges w/Top Rank... To Answer your Questions, YES, Henry's Style Seemed to Translate BETTER to PRO Boxing than Ammy Boxing...NO, REED Never Saw Henry Being a Titlist in Boxing...As for Whether his Style Could Translate to MMA Well, it's Hard to Say...REED Could See a Style like Tyson's or Frazier's Carrying Over to MMA...Henry Had TRACES of that in him, but he was Mostly a "Boxer" Type...More of a Thinking Man's Fighter than a DESTROYER... Again, RINGSIDEMIKE was Right There, Every Step of the Way for Henry's Ammy Career AND Pro Day's w/Top Rank...If he Says it's a Publicity Stunt, REED Believes him... REED:hammert:
I don't doubt it. Just the nature of boxers and crossing over makes it seem that way. Henry would probably be the biggest, young talent from boxing to EVER crossover. And I'm not sure what that really means.
