Major League is near the top for me. I also like Any Given Sunday. I just saw Invictus and that one is pretty good too.

The Damned United is a fine shout. Even though the emphasis isn't on sport per se, I'd have to give the #1 nod to A League Of Their Own. One of Tom Hanks' most perenially-undersold performances.

One of my all-time favorites of any genre. Eric Liddell's internal soliloquy at the end is very inspirational, beautiful even. Some people might not pick him out, but Abraham's coach, Sam Mussabini, is none other than Bilbo Baggins from Peter Jackson's LOTR movies. And he was also good as Zach Braff's dad in Garden State.

I've never seen Ian Charleston's Hamlet, but I believe Olivier himself approved.

It never gets any credit, but Kevin Costner in "For The Love Of The Game" is as good as it gets for me. Something about Vin Scully doing the broadcast that made it real. And I don't know that there is a broadcaster, ever, who can elicit emotion as simply as Scully could.

Also, no one has mentioned 'Hoosiers'.

I agree. And so does Joe Rogan. During UFC 129, Randy Couture used 'Lunatic Fringe' as his entrance song. Rogan gave 'Vision Quest' a shout out as the best wrestling movie ever.

Vision Quest had a lot going for it: Matthew Modine, Linda Fiorentino, Michael Schoeffling (the mohawked guy was actually Jake Ryan from Sixteen Candles). Madonna doing a cameo, singing Crazy for You. Journey doing the movie opener song with Only the Young. The bad guy's name: Brian Chute---a cool nickname for a high school wrestler.

That movie started a few careers: the 90210 chick was also in it (she also played the Princess in Spaceballs).

But Matthew Modine moving down two weightclasses to wrestle the 5-year State Champion was REALLY awesome. That was his Vision Quest! :bears:

The Football Factory isn't a sports movie, there's no sport in it.

The Damned United is a GREAT film though. I was expecting more from Invictus, the actual events make up one of the greatest true life sports stories EVER, and I don't think the film done it justice to be honest with you.

    Cinderella Man
    Million Dollar Baby

Always liked Gladiator with Cuba Gooding Jr.

Good call on Eight Men Out. Cinderella Man too, I thought that was good, despite the poor depiction of Max Baer.

I don't know why, but I just do not respond well at all to Boxing movies.

I thought Rocky I (the sequel was a different story), Raging Bull & Million Dollar Baby were almighty snooze-fest bores, being honest, & I just can't forgive Cinderella Man for the depiction of Baer. It was nothing short of outlandish. Imagine for a moment you were Mr. Baer, & saw yourself portrayed that way. What would that feel like? It was despicable.

One I did like was Rocky Marciano, starring Jon Favreau. The Fighter wasn't bad, recently.
