If anything Im staring to prefer subtitled film, they seem to stimulate thought. You're involved whether you like it or not, can't watch them lazily. Maybe it works like that rossetta stone language thing, joining up your faculties....sensory cross training. Or maybe they're just inherently more interesting because you're taking in an unfamiliar culture. Or maybe I just wanna appear sooooper intellectual and impress hot art school chicks who wear tights, uh yeee.

Anyway, to the point - fave foreign (non english) language films?

    Go....

Can we include martial arts films that are in their original language with english subtitles? If so then most of all Bruce Lee films, Ong Bak, Warrior King.

I saw the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo with subtitles. I thought it was pretty good.

    Voces Innocentes was great.

You should check out Boiring Point and Viorent Cop, really good. Brother is also great but that doesn't really count as a foreign language film as it's based in the States and he doesn't really speak in it

I've been meaning to watch Violent Cop for a while, sounds similar to Bad Lieutenant.

I remember watching Brother also starring Omar Epps, but didn't finish it.

There's a Japanese director called Seijun Suzuki who inspired guys like Beat and Miike etc. He made genre movies in the 60's which have since become cult films, like Branded To Kill, Tokyo Drifter, Youth of the Beast etc. Not only did it influence Japanese filmmakers, but also American ones like Jim Jarmusch, QT and others...

Yeah Brother has quite a slow pace and takes a while to get going but it's great by the finish. Haven't seen it in a while might rent it out tonight :bears:

I thought they were good but not classics. Cassel is the man, plus he bangs M Bellucci, what a legend.

BTW, pretentious cinephile fact of the day: the s in Mesrine is silent. So it is pronounced as "Mehreen".

3 of my faves, and all are awesome dramas. Don't watch these if you need action sequences every few minutes. These films are theme, dialogue, and story based affairs that the dim witted might call, slow paced.

    Butterfly Tongues
(La lengua de las mariposas) - Nice drama that deals with coming of age, love, family and politics. 7.5 on IMDB (8/10 from me).

Let The Right One In (Låt den rätte komma in) - Vampire drama about a preteen boy who falls in love with a young vampire but not in the sappy love way similar to the Twilight series. This is a serious drama and probably my hands down favorite movie. Don't waste your time seeing the American version (Let Me In) the original is so much better and has a strong cult following. I like the film so much that I read the novel even though I hate fiction, and I actually liked the film better than the book. Has an 8.1 on IMDB and a 10/10 from me.

Confessions (Kokuhaku) - Just caught this film last week. It's an awesome drama about a teachers revenge on the students who were responsible for her daughters death and the way the film tied everything together was pretty cool. Has a 7.8 on IMDB and a 7.5/10 from me.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - An oldie but goodie and even though I actually prefer the dubbed version, I first saw and fell in love with the subtitled one. One of my all time favorite films. Nice drama, action, and even some romance. Brilliant piece of film that earned the rave reviews and hype it received. 8/10 on IMDB, 9/10 from me.

Some good ones mentioned already. Hut, The Lives of Others is absolutely brilliant - anyone who hasn't seen it should do so immediately.

Another classic is Un Prophete. Another very very good film.

Also, get The Beat That My Heart Skipped watched too.

I've got Katoichi here to watch. Also The Three Colours trilogy too.

    Arvid: I killed Hanna.
    Harald: Who is Hanna? Why?
Arvid: She wanted to take the TV.
    Harald: Really?
    Arvid: Eh.
Harald. Well then. Where is she?
Arvid: At home, in the hall...........and the kitchen.
