Calzaghe SHOULD Win, but if Byron Mitchell Could have Calzaghe BADLY Hurt, G-Man Likely FINISHES Him...If they Fought 10 Times, Calzaghe WINS 7 or 8 & Gets KO'ed 2 or 3....

McClellan couldn't even knock out Nigel Benn, when he had him bent double against the ropes and had a free swing at Benn's head. According to some here, Benn had no chin. Yet G-Man sparks Calzaghe early if only he connects, despite Calzaghe never being knocked out or even badly hurt, ever. Okay then...

Hopkins is good. Eubanks was good. Kessler is good.

You can't blame Calzaghe for unifying a shit division: he beat what was there and never came close to losing more than once in doing so. And to suggest that Hopkins 'was' good is becoming more and more indefensible with every fight he wins since he lost that fight with Joe. Despite his years he's lost ONE fight in six years and since losing to calzaghe he has schooled the undisputed MW champion and beaten the lineal LHW champion.

He must still be canny, then...

The guys he has beaten were champs in an awful time for boxing... do you not notice how there seem to be more of these old guys hanging around now than there ever were before?? It's because the competition is lousy... some will say it's steroids, but that is cancelled out by the fact that the young guys are very likely using PEDs as well

Incidentally, despite my total contempt for Calzaghe, I would say that he would win all of the same fights Bernard has won in the last 5 years

Bernard Hopkins was a much better fighter in 1998 than he has been in the last 7 years

Yeah, but none of these old guys are in most people's top ten P4P lists like Hopkins is. I understand your point and I agree that the talent pool is a lot thinner today as compared even to fifteen years ago but you can't say that Hopkins is not good or that Calzaghe's win against him counts for nada. You can say that about the RJJ fight, which was a sham and which I said so all the way up to the ring entrances, but Hopkins is still an elite fighter today.

    And Joe beat him.

    Juan Manuel Marquez???

It is absolutely Calzaghe's best win, by miles... He did win, but it was pretty close

If they had fought in 2000, Hopkins would have won for sure... Bernard Hopkins only became this negative, let me rest for a while because I can't keep up a steady workrate fighter in the twilight of his career... in his heyday, he had stamina to burn, that was one of the things that made him so formidable, the guy never stopped... Calzaghe was able to win almost primarily because of activity... he was throwing 90 slaps per round and just piled up points while Bernard rested

I don't even like Bernard, I was a fan of his in the old days, but the last few years he is often unwatchable and he absolutely BLEW the two Taylor fights, he could have and should have won both of them... I lost a lot of respect for him after those fights

Marquez isn't nearly as old as Hopkins... :slap:

Hopkins pulled out of a fight in 2003, not Joe. Calzaghe flew to the US, had a meeting with Showtime and Hopkin's lawyer and all was agreed. Hopkins then doubled his demands and fled. If there is any doubt as to who would have won 'back in the day', it is the fault of Hopkins.

It would have been a better gauge than the one we got in 2008, though. Mind, even if Calzaghe had won that, you and the Scotsman would have been in here calling him a bag of shite...

B-Hop was still a very good fighter, against the right style and opponent but at a serious and legit style disadvantage against an athletic volume puncher like Calzaghe, as the Taylor fight had already shown. At best, it's the super middleweight equivalent to Norton beating Ali, perhaps not even that.

Kessler is just screamingly ordinary at world class level. And Calzaghe didn't even beat him as convincingly as Andre Ward did (who's frankly a better fighter than Joe, most likely).

Calzaghe is, without a doubt the most overrated fighter of modern times. If Hatton had taken on equivalent opposition at Junior Welterweight he'd have retired undefeated and people would be talking all sorts of crap about how great he was.

Time usually sorts these things out pretty well thankfully (it's doing wonders with peoples inflated perceptions of Tszyu & Tito). Can't fucking wait.

Well, as much as he sucks, except than Lewis he's still probably the best british fighter ever (note, i said best, not greatest). The rest of the bunch must be really crappy then.
