Got this on DVD for my Dad on Father's day. Yet to see it, but we are watching it tonight. Anyone seen it and thought it was very good? It looks brilliant.
Personally I thought it was very average. I saw it in the theater, but had a very poor seat (front row, last seat on left) because I arrived a bit late. I had a terrible time understanding Jeff Bridges in this movie. I don't know if it was because of my seat or just because he had so much chewing tobacco or something in his mouth while he was talking. Very average film. No idea why it received such high praise.
I just saw it Friday. My wife and I loved it. The dialogue was a bit hard to understand in places but some of the lines were golden. The bear doctor scene was great.
That was pretty hilarious. I really enjoyed the film. I admit, it was kinda difficult understanding Bridges' voice, but he was very good in the film. Steinfield was excellent and I enjoyed Damon's quirky role too. My Dad loved it, which was most important to me.
Bridges is a sensation, & Damon is quite watchable in this --- I had my doubts going in, but he was good in his own right. Steinfeld has a bright future. She slipped into the dialogue of the day, & the role she was charged with, quite impressively, I thought. She's a pretty girl, too, & that won't hurt her chances of career progression. This is still Bridges' film, though. I loved it, although its replay value probably isn't especially high. I will purchase the DVD, but probably much later, when it's cheap.
Very overrated. It was okay nothing more nothing less. Acting was good but too much talking not enough action and very hard to understand the accents.

I gotta say, I've heard a lot of people complain about the thickness of Bridges' accent. It was thick, but I never once struggled to understand him :dunno:
Its the very definition of mediocre. Its ok for a first viewing, but to me it has ZERO rewatchability.
Your second sentence could reasonably be applied to The Usual Suspects. Replay value isnt everything.
I found Bridges and Damon annoying as hell. I was completely interested in Hailee Steinfeld's performance. It made the movie worth watching. Funny, but Bridges' accent or voice sounded like Billy Bob Thornton's voice in 'Sling Blade'. I kept expecting Bridges to say "Mmmmmm huh, I like french fried taters.."
Haven't seen it yet, but I'll make time this coming week when I'm on vacation. I found the girl in the original really grating, but John Wayne was decent and Glen Campbell was rather likeable (Wayne had one of the best cocky movie lines of all-time, "FILL YOUR HANDS, YOU SON-OF-A-BITCH!!!" Robert Duvall was also really good in an unlikeable role.
The Usual Suspects is overrated (save for the great ending)...... yet its still a LIGHT YEARS better movie than True Shit. Bridges is good in EVERY movie..... but his performance still didnt make this a good movie.
I understood your point. Commando is more rewatchable than Gone With The Wind, but isnt a better movie. But in this case it doesnt apply. True Grit is NOT a great, or even very good movie. I think it could have been alot BETTER if they had given Josh Brolin a larger role.
I thought it was quite good, but we obviously have a core disagreeance. One thing we do agree on is that Brolin was under-represented. There was a also an early scene where Damon's character states Brolin's is a crafty figure, & after appearing like a neanderthal during his opening scenes, there is a moment where Brolin looks intently at Steinfeld & stands up, with the music changing. I thought they were about to introduce him as a lot shrewder than he was letting on, in-line with Damon's contention, but it didn't pan out. I agree that's one area they should've elaborated on.
Like fuck it is. Commando has a tenth of the rewatch value of Gone with the Wind unless you like cheesy dialogue, crappy music, crappy camera work, and a jailbait Alyssa Milano. Don't ever compare something like Commando with one of the top twenty movies of all-time. Dude, I KNOW you know better because you're quite a smart guy---unless you've had a traumatic brain injury or sold rights to your username to someone else.<label for="rb_iconid_8"></label>
Come on buddy. You know damn well commando has more rewatchability than GWTW. Especially if you are a guy. Here. Lets watch it right now. <iframe width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/V9g3SohF5Rc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Of all the dramas that received high praise I can't recall one that disappointed me as much as this one. I agree it was overrated and I also had trouble with Bridges accent. It wasn't horrible, but wasn't very good either and it does have horrible replay value to boot.
For anyone interested in owning a copy, Target had it for $15 on Blu-Ray my last visit. Not sure if that's still the case though.
I guess I thought a lot of the movie was tongue in cheek. Like Damon's character was sort of buffoonish although not over the top. The fact he said Brolin's character was crafty seemed as an excuse for why the great texas ranger couldn't catch him. I dunno why, but I thought the whole movie was a tongue in cheek. If you tried to take it to seriously I think it would seem droll. Maybe that's because I feel all the Cohen brothers movies are a little the same way.
