as mediocre and inept as they both are, you seem to care a lot about the possibility of this fight happening. it's a garbage fight which i probably won't even watch if it happens.

You're missing the point of why I have no interest in him. He is 36 years old. He isn't some spring chicken who is the future of boxing. He has maybe a couple of more good years before he calls it a career and it is painfully obvious, and quite understandable, that he is only trying to get paid at this point. He isn't reaching for greatness, he's reaching for dollars.

in order for that to come to fruition, he needs to fight a fight that people will watch. plus, the middleweight division is garbage. i'm sure he's willing to drop down in weight to fight pac if pac wants it (which most people doubt).

a fight against chavez or canelo isn't exactly what anyone would call 'reaching for greatness' but if he were to thoroughly expose either one of them, it will certainly show what kind of level he's at, which is at the top.

he may be reaching for dollars, but i'm sure he's fully aware of the possibility of facing a top calibre guy in order for him to get paid the amount he wants.

Good point. Except if it means getting to see Chavez Jr. get knocked out, it may be worth watching, even if neither guy belongs on TV.

But a Large Part of a Lb for Lb List is Based on RECENCY...Paul Williams was a Consensus Top 10 Lb for Lb Guy when Martinez KO'ed him...Pavlik was in the Lower Half or NO LOWER than 12-15 Lb for Lb, when Martinez SCHOOLED him...REED Isn't Sure that Donaire has Beaten ANYBODY Ranked as High, Nevermind Beaten TWO Guys Ranked that High...

The ONLY Guy "Easily" Rated Ahead of Martinez is Pacquiao...NONE of the Rest have an "Easy" Case...

I would probably rank Martinez at #3 P4P. It's not that he isn't good, I just don't find him very intriguing. I think it may be mostly due to him being too big for the likes of Mayweather and Pac and too small for the guys at 168-175. He's stuck in a very boring, mediocre 154-160 dead zone.

Couple that with his age and his likely near-term retirement and it's hard to get excited about the guy.

I have zero interest in seeing him blast out the next generation of potential stars like Chavez Jr or Canelo. Those fights wouldn't be competitive and would likely just end those guys careers before they've even had a chance to take off.

I'd be interested in seeing him fight Pac or Mayweather just to see how those guys do, but even if he were to shine in those fights it wouldn't mean all that much or be overly impressive because of his size advantage.

Like it or not, he's being built up as the future. He obviously isn't a future ATG or even very good, but he's already a star.

felix sturm is more of a 'star' than chavez jr.

chavez jr. is a local attraction at best. not sure if he's even that established in mexico. he's well known, but that's about it.

    Strongly Disagree

Sturm is certainly better than Chavez Jr. but there is a reason why all of his fights are on PPV no matter the opponent and there is a reason why guys like Martinez want to fight him. He's an attraction and he brings in the $$$.

you make it sound as if he is targeting Chavez jr. ahead of guys like Pacquiao and Floyd.

it's the other way around. he targeted those guys and they want nothing to do with him. Same with Cotto at 154.

The only big name I can see wanting to face him is Williams again. Other than that there is no big name at 154 or 160 that wants to mess with him.

Since Chavez jr. is popular and Martinez was stripped to make him a champion it makes sense for him to target Chavez. jr.

Just recently Martinez ripped Cotto for not fighting him but will posibly move up to face Chavez jr. at 160
