Nice fight and competitive, but I can't see JMM being able to win this in any way at 135. Arguello is too big, too durable, and too good. Wins by decision and maybe drops JMM along the way in a great fight.
Marguez boxes his butt off and gives Alexis a tight argument, but I don't see anyway he stays on his feet throughout against Arguello's superb offense and great reach... he gets dropped and rocked... Great, great fight, but I like Alexis to carry the day with more effective punching en route to a UD over the game and skillful Marquez
Gotta say Marquez looks a little too vulnerable to me at LW, getting floored by the likes of Katsidis (who I love to death, but isn't a patch on Arguello offensively), & also hurt by the good, but not great (& more worrisome, light-punching) Diaz. Marquez is a riser, though --- you set the bar higher, & he'll climb upto it (he looked more composed against the puzzle of Casamayor than he did against the rampage of Diaz, for instance) or die trying. I love that about the man. Here, he dies trying in round eleven, battered into a corner. He'd make a better fist of this at 130, although Arguello was better there than at 135 as well.
Good fight D&M! Good fight. I think JMM is a better fighter, but I think at 135, where he's comparatively small, he would lose to Arguello, probably having been knocked down at least once. What do you think? JMM would've been faster than Arguello, and would've gotten the better of most of the exchanges, but at the end of the day, he would get hit. And it'd be by Arguello. So, uh, he'd get hurt.
rather than simply claiming JMM is overrated, and then saying it's nonsense, why not articulate why it's so obvious to you that Arguello is better than JMM? and since you think it's nonsense that JMM is better than Arguello, why not explain how Arguello is, "so" much better than JMM, that to claim otherwise is senseless. i can imagine a case for why Arguello is better than JMM. i can't imagine a case, other than a preference for fighters from your child-hood, to make the claim that the idea that JMM is better than Arguello is nonsense.
It is nonsense compare: Featherweight (Arguello) -- KO1 Jose Legra, KO5 Art Hafey, KO 13 Olivares, KO 8 Leonel Hernandez, KO 5 Royal Kobayashi Featherweight (Marquez) -- W12 Agapito Sanchez, TKO10 Robbie Peden, TKO7 Manuel Medina, W7 Derrick Gainer, D12 Pacquiao, W12 Polo pretty close there, Arguello was more consistent there and dominant and didn't have trip ups against Chris John/Freddie Norwood types, so he has to get the edge there Junior Lightweight (Arguello) -- KO13 Escalera, KO13 Escalera II, TKO11 Limon, TKO7 Chacon, TKO11 Castillo, TKO5 Navarrete Junior Lightweight (Marquez) -- W12 Barrera, W12 Juarez, L12 Pacquiao (a loss, but a good loss, so I'm counting it as a positive for JMM) Obviously, that one is not close... Arguello comfortably Lightweight (Arguello) -- TKO8 Boza-Edwards, W15 Watt, TKO14 Mancini, KO5 Ganigan, W10 Ramirez Lightweight (Marquez) --TKO11 Casamayor, TKO9 Diaz, W12 Diaz II, TKO9 Katsidis That one is a whitewash for Arguello, no contest so three different divisions where comparing the two, Arguello has the better wins very clearly in two and edges it in another... 3-0 Arguello, seems fairly straightforward
Being better and being greater are 2 different things. I think nobody disputes that Argüello is the greater, as he has better and more numerous high profile wins, but as a fighter, Marquez has some advantages over Argüello (much better handspeed, better footwork), so it's not totally unimaginable that Marquez could win. I would favor Argüello too, but not always the greater fighter wins.
But Arguello has a vast advantage in power as well as being much more difficult to badly hurt than Marquez... If JMM could be rocked by Diaz and katsidis, I don't see him doing too well fending off the ridiculous sharpness of Arguellos shots
Arguello is taller and hits harder so he's a bit better at higher weights, but head to head against Marquez it's probably a similar fight regardless.
pretty much where I'm coming from as well Marquez is a superb fighter and he gives a great account fo himself at all three weights, but the end result is Arguello winning all the same
