Is it me or has this summer sucked when it's come to boxing? I've been accused of being negative before, so I invite anyone to correct me if I'm wrong. I guess Maidana/Morales was good. Other than that, what do we have to be thankful for? And believe me, the question is not rhetorical - I'm simply having a hard time looking back fondly at this summer when it comes to boxing. Am I wrong?
Damn, I can't believe Berto-Ortiz was back in April. I enjoyed Hopkins tooling that punk Pascal, but otherwise, you might be right.
Summer was GREAT for boxing. We learned that the great Floyd is returning to the ring in September. The anticipation of that alone has rekindled interest in boxing this summer.
boxing sucks. its only gotten worse since i wrote about the writing on the wall. How many good fights have there been this entire year so far? Is it 50?....no it isn't even 5.
Just to show how lackluster this summer has been... so far, the two fights mentioned (Maidana-Morales and Ortiz-Berto) both took place in the spring. HBO put together a busy schedule for a 4-5 week stretch, just none of the fights turned out particularly memorable - except of course the ridiculously scored Paul Williams-Erislandy Lara bout. Mares-Agbeko was a good fight, albeit marred by controversy. Rios-Antillon was fun for as long as it lasted, a recurring theme for any Brandon Rios fight it seems. As far as notable fights, its been a crappy summer. ESPN2 has been very strong, in fact probably its best season yet, including a Fight of the Year contender in Pawel Wolak-Delvin Rodriguez a couple of weeks ago. Some very good fights overseas as well, but of course... falling tree, vacant forest and all that.
its the notable fights that r a problem. Lara getting robbed is honestly the only fight i remember since...well multiple months. As long as there's no notable names getting in the ring, undoubtedly it will seem like its been a poopy summer, however as you mentioned the ESPN2 stuff has been solid. Help us Jake. Use your wonderful connections to whisper about HBO and Showtime needing actual decent fights.
Traditional weight classes (plus cruiser now, because it makes plenty of sense considering how huge heavyweights are now) one champ per weight class national comission overseeing things to ensure fighter safety and honest record-keeping, rankings Jake Donovan as commissioner flawless
Nah, Double...you are spot on. This summer has been nothing to write home about. Hopefully it's just a lull.
Nah, U're Right, Doub... There's ALMOST Always a MEGA-Fight in the Summer Months...Not So Much in 2011... REED:hammert:
Well, the good news is Maidana/Guerrero is taking place in August. I can't imagine this fight won't be good, although fight-ending cut from a head-butt is always a possibility, especially when Guerrero's involved. I have a hard time envisioning Guerrero winning this fight, but he's surprised me before. On the under-card is a fight between two guys I've never heard of, which doesn't mean necessarily they're not good. But it does mean they're not big names in the sport, which is what we all like to see.
Well, this is no surprise coming from you. You satisfy every criteria necessary to be a PBF groupie: 1. Easy to please 2. Easily fooled by gaudy wins over lousy competition 3. Seduced by hand-speed over substance 4. Doesn't hold bravery or humility in high esteem 5. Wants only to be on the side that's winning 6. Has no appreciation for the individual - lives in a media-driven fantasy world where down is up and 2+2=5 7. Believes what he wants to believe 8. Likes sizzle more than steak 9. Former RJJ groupie 10. Refers to illegal aliens as undocumented
Klitshko-Haye drew bigger headlines at newspapers over here than perhaps anything since Lewis-Tyson, apart from fights including Finns. Too bad that fight sucked. I think the fights I remember best from this summer is Fury-Chisora and Khan-Judah, however sad that is
Klitschko-Haye was a BIG Fight for Sure, but the "Fight" Itself was SUCH a Letdown, it's Almost as if the Bout NEVER Happened...No Fault of Wlad's, but it IS What it Is.... REED:hammert:
I don't know man, I think both are to blame for such a dud. With Wlad incredibe run of stinker, it's hard to give him the benefit of the doubt.
I don't blame either man for it being a stinker. It was a stinker because their styles made it as such. If Hearns fought Whitaker at 147, that fight would have been a stinker too, with the same result.
And it would've been as much Hearns' fault as Whitaker's? Give me a break! You're going to sit there and not blame Haye for how boring that fight was? It'd be one thing if Haye were winning with the approach he took, but he wasn't. He was losing round after round, but because he's a puss he carried on in the same manner, taking almost no chances, content with disappointing everyone who's ever supported him.
I agree, both fighters have to be blamed. This has been a pretty bad summer as far as big fights go, and while we're at it we might as well mention that there were a couple of egregious robberies to boot. The boxing world is in a malaise that can only be lifted by Floyd/Pac. I am looking forward to Floyd/Ortiz, though, and I do consider Ortiz a very worthy opponent for PBF.
Haye was more to blame. He was losing the rounds, he had to take chances to stand a chance of winning. Wlad didn't need to take risks, Haye did.
If U're Gonna PRAISE Floyd for 'Rekindling' your Interest in Boxing, U Should Also BLAME him for DULLING your Interest in the 1st Place...Ortiz'll B Floyd's 4th Fight in 4 Years & the 3rd CONSECUTIVE Time that he's Fighting Someone OTHER than the 1 Guy EVERYBODY in the Woooooorld Wants to See him Fight...
