I still think nothing beats Rahman and his corner complaining about a botched/quick count while he laid there on the canvas for over 20 seconds. :notallthere:

The "Henry Cooper would have knocked out Cassius Clay if Clay didn't have extra time to recover between rounds" controversy

To this day, I have NO IDEA how this came into existence

Watch the fight... the time between the end of the fourth and the beginning of the fifth is SIXTY SECONDS, there is no extra time... yet, this is repeated as gospel constantly

The next time someone brings it up, blast them, for the good of accuracy

If you know how to score a boxing match you HAD to give Taylor seven rounds in the first Hopkins fight.

    1. Lewis was "robbed" in his first fight with Holyfield.

The reality is that Lewis did enjoy some big early rounds but went to sleep for most of the rest of the fight. Politicians and assorted morons jumped on the bandwagon thereafter and made it out to be way more than it was, namely the incompetent judging of one round and Lewis doing fuck all from the end of the 6th to the start of the 12th.

    2. Jack Dempsey Was Robbed In "The Long Count" fight with Tunney.

Tunney had his senses about him and was savvy enough to key into the fact that a mistake had been made. He duly took the "Long count" {made longer by the fact that Dempsey had to be told twice to go to a neutral corner}, got up, floored Dempsey a round later and won handily. Was the count long? Yes- but Dempsey himself was to blame and Tunney's head was clear anyways, so clear he realized the count was long and stayed down to take advantage of it.

Dundee strikes me as one of the luckiest trainers of all time. He also has hung around for too long after the fact.

Agree on The Long County (Dempsey himself basically agreed that Tunney's behavior was tactical, not essential)

but you are off-base on Lewis/Holy... it's at worst a 116-112 win for Lennox Lewis... you win 8 rounds out of 12 and you end up with a draw, it means you got robbed... what exactly did Holyfield DO in the second half of that fight?

Agree, as far as being a TRAINER

but he was a GREAT cornerman... one of the best cutmen ever, a steadying, supportive presence in the corner... had a knack for keeping his guys focused

but, technically, you are 100% right, he couldn't train a guy from scratch

Tszyu Judah. Judah goes down hard. Gets up quick. His legs give way and he goes flying down again. Ref stops it. Judah is up and starts wobbling again the referee is holding him up to prevent it. Bad stoppage ? Um no.

Let's say you are correct on the Holy fight......you can call it a bad decision. No need for the "Eugenie Williams Worked For Don King" routine that the tabloids and the politicians went on with.

How else do you explain scoring an 8-4 fight 7-5 for the guy with the 4?

It's like Whitaker vs Ramirez ... A 9-3 fight in whitakers favor and one guy has it 9-3 in favor of Ramirez ... Seems wishful to chalk that up to mere incompetence

That was Tim Smith immediately afterwards who played the greatest part in the creation of that shit. He kept suggesting that it had been stopped early, trying to get away from the fact that Judah had {a} been beaten and had {b} started a small riot afterwards.

This fight gets alot less controversial over time, as we realize that given Zabs lack of mental fortitude, he had no chance of winning this fight. At the time, he was undefeated and it was somewhat controversial, no denying it.

All I'm saying, is that in the days following the fight, it was close to 50-50 on who thought it was an early stoppage. In fact that fight helped cement Nady's legacy as a 'hands-on' ref. In retrospect, now it's closer to 75-25 thinking it was totally legit. I actually recall after the Baldomir fight alot of people made reference back to the Zoo fight about how Judah folded under pressure, and the questionable legitamacy of that stoppage no longer mattered since Zab can't deal with pressure, thus it's now more legit.

Looking at the tape I have (got it from Dubblechin), the pause between rounds lasts about 64 seconds. They do point at the glove as if there was something wrong but nothing was done and neither got any advantage.

However, and this is a true story, a boxing expert named Karl Hegman told me that the tape has been edited and in reality there was a longer pause

Two recent ones also came to mind.

1: Kermit the Frog contesting the fight should've been a NC after he literally took a dive against Paul Williams.

2: Allan Green contesting his fight should've been a NC for shots to the back of the head after getting his ass kicked by Glengoffe Johnson.

There was no reason for a NC, but it should have been a TKO

I was going to give Irish a hard time for his awful Lewis/Holy example until I saw this bukkake.

Tunney/Dempsey , Ali/Cooper were the first that sprung to mind.

Lewis/Holy is a terrible example. Sorry Irish.
