One of the greatest rivalries ever, regardless of who you like or dislike... two great fighters who made their greatest fights against one another

    Some views from my end

    • I don't give a flying fuck what anyone here has to say about it, I scored all three fights closely for Barerra
    • The first fight had as much sustatined action and skillfull mayhem as any fight ever fought
    • The third fight, probably the least controversial one scorewise, ironically was perhaps the most compelling of the three and a microchasm of the rivalry
    • At various times in all three fights, both Marco Antonio and Erik were hurt and seemed likely to go down but they didn't (save an incorrect ruling against Morales in fight I) ... Call it melodramatic or pretentious, but to me it always seemed that what kept them up wasn't something as simple as pride, but rather pure, glowing hatred... Rarely have two boxing rivals truly hated each other that much
    • I pray we will one day see it's like again, but I doubt it, it's the best rivalry of my lifetime
    Your thoughts?

second greatest fight i saw live, was their first bout. the third was nothing to sneeze at either, among the top ten of those ive attended. i had the first fight clear for barrera even without the bullshit knockdown. second fight for morales, and the third fight a draw.

i kinda give the edge to vasquez-marquez as far as trilogies go, tossing out the meaningless 4th bout.

It was so personal, between these two, just riveting stuff.

It's the kind of thing you pray for, a rivalry that good and at the end of the day, all you can do is be glad you were alive as it was going down

Pacman tore both their assholes apart! Felt sorry for Morales in the third Pacman fight though. He was just done. Treated like a complete bum.

I actually think the Marquez-Vazquez series was even better, though its amazingly close.

You could split a hair between the best fight of each series - Barrera-Morales I & Vazquez-Marquez III.

I'm a huge fan of Erik Morales, always have been. One of the baddest men to ever grace a ring.

    Fuck that other fag.

Nobody dominated anyone in any of those fights, the only really clear victory was for Barrera the homo in the last fight. Barrera is kind of like erik's Ken norton, but even then Erik is at *worst* 1-1-1 with him.

Going by their common opponents, morales is clearly the much better fighter.

    Also, Barrera eats dicks.

I had it Barrera, Morales, Barrera. 2-1 MAB.

Anyway I agree, the best rivalry of my life time. I remember I watched the first fight round my nans as she had Sky at the time and we didn't, and I remember at the time just KNOWING it was going to be an amazing fight. During that 5th round I remember waking everyone up upstairs because I was going mental. Awesome stuff.

Glorified midgets. Morales was conceived by God only to come back at a later stage to prove how shit Maidana, and therefore Amir Khan, really is. Barrera was conceived so that man might see the true Glory of God, through his only begotten Son, Emmanuel of Manila.

A past-his-best Morales beat a prime Pacquiao in his last great performance.

It was not the prime Pacquiao. After he developed to a more well-rounded fighter, Morales had no chance with him anymore. Out of the fab four (Pac, JMM, Barrera, Morales), Erik was clearly the weakest link

Vazquez/Marquez doesn't even really compare for me - probably because I didn't care who won those fights.

That's horseshit, since Barerra has something Morales does not: Hamed... an immense win

Erik is actually, at worse, 0-3 with him

    agree

they were great fights, but the personal hatred isn't there between them and since I was not a big fan (or detractor) of either guy, it didn't matter as much to me

But Morales has Pacquiao, probably the best win of the decade.

Still, fight 1 and 3 were CLEAR MAB wins.

my point is that loadedgloves is acting like Barerra's whole career is Morales and that is nonsense

    Morales, too.

Neither Marquez or Vazquez were great fighters in my book.

I think Marquez was borderline, he had a good run as champ at 118 and beat a formidable title holder to win it... Vazquez, definitely not "great"

I personally disliked Morales, but yes he was a great fighter

MAB won all 3 fights against Morales. Both are legends! Morales also got a clear win over Pacman. That was Morales' last great performance but then he started to decline.

I won;t claim that either of them are as great as Morales or Barrera, but not sure I can agree that they weren't great in their own right.

I'm also in the club that has Vazquez-Marquez series (excluding the cashout 4th fight) slightly ahead of this one, though both rank 1 and 1a in my list of greatest in-ring rivalries. Bowe-Holyfield is somewhere up there as well.

agREED that the hatred between Barrera and Morales is a big part of what makes it special. But for some reason, I can just never forgive the way the second fight played out. At no point did a lull exist between Vazquez-Marquez or Bowe-Holyfield. That's why I can watch those six fights over and over, whereas MAB-Morales is always "just" about I and III (two truly incredible fights).

I hear ya, man. I lean towards MAB/Morales simply because I was emotionally invested.

Vazquez/Marquez were incredible too, although I prefer to rewatch the Bowe/Holy fights.

I have to say, I loved the surprise of the third one... a lot of people thought MAB was damaged goods by then and that Morales would stop him, Barerra was truly inspired that night

but, the first one is tough to beat for the unrelenting insanity of it
