Cain Velasquez vs. Junior Dos Santos headlines UFC's debut on FOX by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Sep 02, 2011 at 1:00 pm ET Cain Velasquez (9-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC) and Junior Dos Santos (13-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC) will lead the UFC's charge on to network television. UFC president Dana White today announced that Velasquez and Dos Santos will headline UFC on FOX 1, which takes place Nov. 12 at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. The event marks the UFC's debut on network television and kicks-off a seven-year deal between the UFC and FOX, a partnership that also includes UFC programming on FX and FUEL TV. Velasquez and Dos Santos were expected to meet in the main event of UFC 139, which takes place just one week later, on Nov. 19. However, the contest was never officially announced for the event. While a new headliner will need to be secured for the card, White said UFC 139 will go on as scheduled. Dos Santos defeated Shane Carwin in this past June's UFC 131 main event. The victory, which earned Dos Santos the title shot, came via lopsided scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 30-26 following a dominant first round that left his opponent bruised and bloodied. The victory was the Brazilian's eighth straight (and seventh consecutive win in the UFC). Other victories have come over the likes of Fabricio Werdum, Stefan Struve and Roy Nelson. Velasquez, a former Division I All-American wrestler, is 9-0 since turning pro in MMA in 2006. All but one of the victories came via knockout. The California-based American Kickboxing Academy fighter won the title with a first-round TKO of then-champ Brock Lesnar in October but has been sidelined ever since after undergoing surgery for a torn rotator cuff. Prior to the win, he defeated the likes of Cheick Kongo, Ben Rothwell and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. The Velasquez vs. Dos Santos matchup will be the only guaranteed fight during the one-hour special, but the promotion will put on a full fight card for fans attending the event. WOW!!!!... THE BEST Heavyweight Fight to B Made is on "Regular" TV???...Gotta Give MMA its PROPS on this 1...BRILLIANT Move:cheer:... As for the Fight Itself, REED has NOfuckingCLUE who'll Win, but he Definitely WON'T Miss it... REED:Lok:
Wow! The UFC isn't playing around. They're going for a grand-slam right out of the gate. This is the fight which matters most right now! I'm a bit confused though. Why is Dana White using a fight of his caliber to headline a FREE event? Unless I'm suspecting that Dana doesn't feel that JDS and Velasquez would necessarily draw big ppv numbers, hence the reason he's putting it on free. Although the FOX show is definitely large scale to help bring in more mma viewers.
It's on Fox. The UFC probably doesn't need to do shit. NFL opens in a week, FOX runs the ad during football, boom goes the dynamite. Cain TKO mid rounds.
It's a promotional dream. And I would suspect the fight will be wildly entertaining and the energy in the broadcast will be frenetic.
This is the biggest heavyweight fight ever in the UFC and I'm guessing it won't be topped for quite some time. Both men are 7-0 which is quite a feat considering how well rounded and skilled fighters are nowadays. Like someone said they should promote the shit out of this fight because given who is fighthing it will not dissapoint. JDS will knock out Cain and become the heavyweight champion and I don't see him losing any time soon. WAR JDS. Bye champ Cain and I hope you rematch Lesnar and kick his redneck piece of shit ass again.
They're 7-0 in the UFC.. Dos Santos was tossed around like a rag doll by Ferreira earlier in his career and submitted via armbar. Personally I can see this fight going so many different ways that it is difficult to call.
Wow, excellent fight, the best to be made at heavyweight no question. I'd say without doubt these guys are the top 2. I have no idea who wins, they're both very good and well rounded. If push comes to shove I guess I would have to pick Cain due to better wrestling, but I'm rooting for JDS. BTW TLC at "mid rounds". There is really only one mid round in MMA, either round 3 of a championship fight, or round 2 of a normal fight. Rounds 2 and 4 are as much early/late as mid in a 5 rounder.
Come on. Wrong adjective. It's not bigger than Brock's fights, perhaps not any of Brock's fights. It is one of the best matchups of the year, though. JDS seems like the better fighter to me and I think his resume is superior. Don't see Cain winning any other way than boring gnp. That would be a big backfire for the UFC as this is a huge matchup to open their free tv series. If JDS wins, as I think he will, it will probably be a much more tv-friendly fight.
Mike lets get serious, this is one of the biggest UFC heavyweight matches ever. Not in PPV numbers but we are talking new age heavyweights and just these guy's records and how well they have done in the ufc. UFC called Randy vs Brock the biggest heavyweight fight ever and that was a crock
