Openly Gay active fighters. Thoughts?

Yes...another gay topic from D&D..."you're obsessed and in the closet" blah blah...

But I'm curious as to your take on it.

In your opinion is it better to keep it under wraps until the career is over or do y'all advocate "honesty and being gay and proud". Is "Don't ask don't tell" better in the sport of boxing or should we scrap these archaic views?

I think fighters should keep that shit under wraps, for many reasons.

Most obviously boxing is a macho sport, fans and other fighters will view them differently

Would affect their career in terms of getting fights. Other fighters probably wouldn't want to risk losing to a homosexual.

Press conferences would be dominated by "gay bashing" from the opponents and their managers/trainers/promoters.

It's an unnecessary distraction from their career. What's the relevance of their sexual orientation?

It may unduly motivate opponents who do decide to fight them..who would rather die in the ring than lose to a gay guy.

They should come out of the closet.

There is money in this kind of thing.

To become an icon in boxing, even a Gay icon, a Gay icon who beats straight guys, could be worth a lot of money.

 

I don't see a reason why they should be in the closet, nor do I see a reason why they should make a big deal out of it. If someone is gay and it becomes public, I couldn't really care.

All in all I don't know ANY openly gay top level male athletes from any sport. No hockey, football, track-and-field, nothing. Obviously there is a barrier against 'coming out' and I do think it should be reduced. Nobody should need to hide who they are because of narrow-minded people or childish macho culture

Imagine if someone like Mayorga or Duran fought an openly gay opponent. The press conferences would get real ugly.

I just don't think many athletes would appreciate the public scrutiny because most of society borders on ignorance. You say that athletes should be proud of who they are. They could try to be proud but it's hard to be proud if that athlete was to visit a forum and see about 100 snarky and disrespectful comments about how the said athlete likes to take it up the ass or get his salad tossed by dudes and being subjected to insults like "gay f*ck" or "homo", etc.
Nobody wants to be ridiculed and gay people are targeted more than anybody else.

But to seriously answer the fag question no fags should not come out. There are ignorant people out there who unquestionably would ridicule the fag boxers and make them wish they stayed in their comfy fag closets. Also I think since boxing is such a masculine sport a lot of people would refuse to watch two fags box. Can you imagine a bunch of drunk rowdy guys on a Saturday night wanting to order a boxing fight and only to find out Chase "Rainbow" Stevens is fighting Julian "Pounder" Jackson ?
