NORTH BERGEN, N.J. -- Former junior welterweight champion Arturo Gatti was murdered two years ago in Brazil, a panel of forensic evidence experts said Wednesday as it presented the results of a 10-month investigation initiated to challenge the official version that Gatti committed suicide.
"This case must be reopened if authorities in Brazil have an iota of moral, ethical and legal concern for their reputation," said noted forensic pathologist Cyril Wecht, who termed the version produced by the initial criminal investigation "pure, unadulterated fiction."
Brazilian authorities initially considered Gatti's wife a prime suspect and arrested her, but released her soon after and concluded Gatti had hung himself with a handbag strap.
Eduardo Trindade, a lawyer assisting Gatti's family, said Wednesday he would have the panel's report translated and presented to prosecutors in Brazil within the next month or two and would push for an indictment of Amanda Rodrigues Gatti.
While no one at Wednesday's news conference explicitly accused her of being involved in murder, several speakers stopped barely short of that.
"If she was there alone, who committed the homicide?" said Paul Ciolino, a Chicago-based investigator hired by Pat Lynch, Gatti's former manager. "He was murdered because he had some dough. It's the oldest motive in the world."
Amanda Gatti is involved in a legal battle with Gatti's family over her late husband's fortune, estimated at $6 million by Ciolino. A civil trial is under way in Canada.
Using crime scene photos, interviews and autopsy reports as well as computer-generated simulations, the team of experts challenged the official version on numerous fronts.
A severe laceration on the back of Gatti's head couldn't have happened during a fall to the floor, and the position he was found in, with his head halfway wedged under a cabinet, was not consistent with a hanging, they said. In addition, the handbag strap he allegedly used wasn't strong enough to hold 78 pounds for more than a few seconds, far shorter than the several hours alleged by police based on interviews with Amanda Gatti. The laceration was caused by a blunt instrument and could have incapacitated Gatti before he was strangled, Wecht said.
Two hand towels covered with blood, presumably from the head injury, were never tested by Brazilian authorities, according to Brent Turvey, an Alaska-based forensic scientist.
The Italian-born, Canadian-raised Gatti developed a large following in New Jersey, where he lived and trained beginning in the early 1990s. Nicknamed "Thunder," he fought some of his most memorable fights at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall, including a trilogy of slugfests with fellow 140-pounder Micky Ward beginning in 2002 that endeared him to fans. Some of those bouts played on TV monitors on the walls of Global Boxing Gym during Wednesday's news conference.

I loved Gatti as a fighter, but he was no saint.

He pissed plenty of people off when he was down in Brazil.

Yeah no surprise there. What an obstruction of justice this has all been.

Arguello was murdered too, and his was even more obvious. But in a corrupt state like Venezuela good luck doing anything about it, especially when a guy us murdered for political reasons.

Yep, although he may have meant Valero who that statement could also apply to, strangely enough.

Gotta love it. All this posturing....all this "your legal system sucks and ours is the best" nonsense from the US Authorities.

Let me tell you.....Gatti was a violent depressive who liked to booze and slap people about. I'm not prone to making the popular mistake of feeling sorry for him because he was a fan-favourite.

Gatti always had the makings of being a fuck-up and thus is how he ended up.

As for the legalities, yeah, sure, re-open the case. I bet it degenerates into a prick-measuring contest and they wind up slapping his flunky ex-wife away for a few years while the real villains walk away.

How is Arguello being murdered more obvious?

Arguello was known to be depressed, a drug abuser for years, who once almost killed himself in front of his 6 year old son.

I'm more suspicious of the Gatti case, where investigators (not the one Gatti's family paid for) said the purse strap was unlikely to hold Gatti's weight. You have motive for murder, Gatti's wife had become the beneficiary to his life insurance policy, or the fact that Gatti beat her up.

Spouses are nearly always the beneficiary to the life insurance policy.

I still have yet to grasp how this is nearly always considered the reason to put the spouse away whenever a suspicious death occurs.

Easy peasy for the policey I guess.

Logical reason why we have so many serial murderers getting away for long stretches at a time. No motive, no reason to look for anybody else.

Make no mistake. This isn't some selfless crusade in the name of justice.

This is a bunch of greedy relatives making a play at Gatti's estate.

No way can they put the wife in jail..............but civil court is an entirely different animal, as our friend OJ can attest to.

If Gatti was piss poor, this would not even be an issue right now.

No, but I'm not going to pretend to be outraged.

I don't really know what happened or who did what, and I doubt any of his "concerned advocates" do either.

    Karma's a bitch sometimes.

it would still be an issue. it wouldn't manifest the way it has with lots of money at stake, but it would still affect the people who loved Gatti and they'd still want justice for him. and i'm not sure our disillusionment with capitalism should have anything to do with the fact Gatti was likely murdered and then made to look like he killed himself. if we can't take our eye off the money for one second to see that that's an issue, maybe we're the ones overly obsessed with money.

Maybe whatever happened to Gatti down there, was "justice". Just not your brand of it.

Neither Gatti or Valero get much sympathy from me, I'm sorry to say.

My god, you and your inferiority complex.

Who said the "US legal system was the best"? As usual you read in from your narrow begrudged little world with your persistent hangups.

You're a smart guy, right? The fucking strap he supposedly "hung" with for hours couldn't hold 78 pounds for a few seconds.

Have you any idea what the legal systems are like in Central and South American countries? I've been there many times, it's a fucking disaster. I have to fly to Mexico for work a few times a year, and it scares the shit out of me, especially the bordertowns. Most of it is really just chaos.

I don't have any pity for the family or the wife - both could very well be seeking "truth" only in a vie for money. Obviously. But if Arturo Gatti was killed, and it is forensically obvious, who fucking cares whose legal system is "better"? With your bizarre tinted goggles an article which details forensic evidence of murder appears to you to be..... US authorities claiming their legal system is the best? How do you function?

Valero killed his wife. Gatti is a little bit of a different story. No idea why you're intent on judging him based on hearsay, all we know is he's dead, and what the investigation has concluded is that it's murder.

ONE investigation has concluded that it is Murder. Another one has concluded that it is Suicide. Same with the Madeleine McCann situation, where one set of opinions said she was abducted, probably by charming people from across the water, and another set of opinions said she was killed by her parents.

Needless to say, the British say she was robbed and the Portuguese suspect the parents.

Same here with the Gatti story.

The original investigation seemed perfectly legit to you? I know you're just doing what you do and stirring up shit, but come on.

Of course not. I agree....but here is where I differ....I wouldn't trust so-called American authorities any more than their Brazilian equivalents. Its not a distrust of American authorities....its a distrust of authorities. People always come to conclusions which suit them, or suit the people backing them.

Personally, for me, Gatti was murdered.

An investigation of paid experts with an agenda. Not exactly un-biased.

As a matter of fact when they hired Michael Baden to look over the case, he seemed pretty non-committal as to an outcome.

Also, let's say Arturo WAS murdered. They aren't really looking for THE killer. They're looking to point the finger at the wife, no matter the scenario, so they can make an estate grab.

Take Bonavena for instance. Bonvena was shot dead and the guy who did it got 15 months or something like that. Bonavena was murdered, plain and simple, but the people behind it were connected in a big way so nobody took any major heat.

Now if Bonavena had been an American, in Argentina...well..they would have said he topped himself or some shit....figure out the response that would have got in the States.

The point is that this investigation has concluded it as such, and regardless of whether it is true or not, you speak as though it is perfectly acceptable and possibly even desirable if it is.

No, I'm just not a member of the string the bitch up brigade.

I think Arturo made his own bed, and it pains me to say because he was a charismatic guy who made for insanely entertaining fights.

Fact is, the family doesn't care WHO murdered Arturo or WHY. They are only interested in over-turning the will.

Its a financial concern. That should be be obvious. Tying the wife to the murder is useful only in that aids their main motive.

The family's motives for pursuing this are irrelevant as to whether or not Gatti's murder (assuming he was murdered) should be looked upon as something acceptable or not.
