I don't really blame him but Larry Merchant really had the opportunity to put Floyd on the spot but missed it. Merchant himself probably regrets it as the best answer usually comes far after the fact. His ''I would have kicked your ass 50 years ago'' was kind of funny but pretty lame as we all know he would have get beat up in any kind of fight vs Floyd, no matter what's his age. Worst of all, he missed his chance of doing boxing a huge favor. It reminded me of a story about Cus D'Amato not wanting Patterson to fight Liston. But Patterson was asked by the president of the US himself, JF Kennedy, when he was gonna fight Liston and it made Patterson go against his mentor wish and fight Liston. Merchant should have put pressure on Floyd after he tried to get in a shooting match with him. When he's was telling him he wasn't shit, he should have told Floyd : -Floyd, I know it,s in your habit to pick fights with old man but when are you gonna man up and fight Pac. Floyd would have no doubt babbled something about drug testing and Merchant should have answered -Excuses and more excuses, you'll never fight Pac because you're a coward and would much rather pimp the public with farces such as tonight fiasco. oh well, instead we had some cheap laugh about an old man threatening to kick a boxing star ass if he was younger and Larry get to keep his big job at HBO
That exchange was hilarious. Especially because they both came off looking bad and I hate both of them.
Yes, Floyd was a model of refinement and grace. Telling people they "ain't shit". That's nice. I guess the public is just terrified of a 150lb 5'7" black guy with orange and black shorts.
Merchant is awesome! You could tell he got a kick out of that little exchange. It's good for the varicose veins. :bears:
I thought Larry did fine for someone 80 years old and obviously slowing down tremendously. The look he gave to the camera when Floyd snapped was all-time great Merchant. I laughed so hard at the shock on his face; he was not expecting Floyd's explosion. Any other interviewer says nothing to Floyd, maybe a "that was rude", and just turns away to do the next interview. Larry has always had issues with rude fighters, or fighters who are saying something obviously false, or promoters who muscle their way in to interviews. For some reason, Larry gets triggered by those things, and Floyd triggered him. I felt that given Floyd's disrespect (and the fact that Floyd turned away and was actually leaving Larry, meaning there weren't going to be any more questions) Larry handled himself nicely. I am glad it was Larry in the ring and not Kellerman, who wouldn't have said anything back to Floyd.
Agreed. Kellerman is a company-man, Larry is old-school. I know Floyd and Larry have previous, but you have to take it one interview at a time, and, in my opinion, Larry didn't do anything wrong last night. Floyd had an easy win, and should have been in a good enough humour for an interview. He knew what was coming. He knew the Manny Pac questions were coming.
Floyd don't do interviews for a lousy $25 Mill. per fight. How's he gonna make it rain with chump change like that? :nono: Floyd's lookin' for "Seinfeld" money. Syndication. That's where the real money's at. ray:
Kellerman would have said "Floyd, let me ask you a hard-hitting question... WHY ARE YOU SO AWESOME???"
Kellerman is a fucking company man. Max "Where do I sign" Kellerman. Even Cosell took it less in the ass than Max Anal does.
Cosell early in his career would actually ask brutal questions pretty fearlessly... "Did you take a dive?" to Sonny Liston but later on he was willing to deep throat Ali and Leonard dry, no lube, no spit
If you watch it again, Floyd looks at Schaefer, Schaefer nods at him, and then Floyd goes on his rant and ends the interview. Merchant said that Floyd ended it to avoid questions regarding a Pacquiao fight. I figured Floyd would just go into his usual shit about drug testing, but maybe he and Schaefer decided beforehand to end the interview quickly. They're probably making a matchup between Mayweather-Khan.
How can anyone not like Larry? I really don't understand. He's hilarious. I think he's clearly the best boxing TV guy ever. He's funny, entertaining, not too whiny and annoying like Kellerman or Lampley, and for an 80 year old he's pretty fucking awesome. He actually knows boxing better than pretty much all the others too, especially those goons on showtime.
Hahahahahaha, fucking spot on. I can't stand that sycophanting little groupie and his "hard hitting" questions. Awful, awful boxing journo/broadcaster.
don't get me wrong, I like Merchant too usually, I just think he missed a big chance of doing boxing a huge help
