Vitor Belfort says he's fighting Cung Le at UFC 139 in San Jose

by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Sep 10, 2011 at 8:45 am ET
[IMG]Another key Strikeforce star is heading to the UFC.

Vitor Belfort (20-9 MMA, UFC) announced on his official website that he's fighting former Strikeforce middleweight champion and noted kickboxer Cung Le (7-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at UFC 139 in San Jose, Calif.

On Friday sources close to the event told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) the bout was under consideration but that Le was still working on details for his UFC deal.

A deal apparently has been reached.

UFC 139 takes place Nov. 19 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. With a heavyweight title fight between champ Cain Velasquez and Junior Santos moved from UFC 139 to UFC on FOX 1 – and given Le's massive following in San Jose – he and Belfort very likely could headline the pay-per-view show.

Le, 39, went 17-0 as a Sanshou kickboxer before moving to MMA in 2006. Le, who hasn't fought in 16 months while pursuing an acting career, has fought exclusively for Strikeforce, where he posted a 7-1 record (with seven knockout victories) with an array of flashy and highlight-reel wins. His only defeat during his run came to Scott Smith, who pulled off a stunning come-from-behind KO win in the final couple minutes of their December 2009 bout. However, Le avenged the defeat in his next bout with a KO set up by a spinning back kick.

Thanks heavily to Le, Strikeforce has drawn some massive crowds in San Jose, where the fighter has many Vietnamese fans. In fact, he was a part of both of the best-attended Strikeforce events in history. Both took place in San Jose.

He now meets 34-year-old Belfort, who recently rebounded from a vicious KO title loss to champ Anderson Silva with a dominant victory over Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 133. Belfort, who's now won six of his past seven fights, scored a "Knockout of the Night" award with the Akiyama victory. In fact, his past four victories (and nine of his past 10) have all come via knockout.

I haven't see much of Cung Le, I only saw his fight with Shamrock. Can he fight on the ground?

Not really, but he has good enough takedown defense. The Sanshou kickboxing he did for years incorporated throws, and he never lost.

Belfort could easily blitz him, but Cung Le could come off the street and knock nearly anyone out.

I don't know about that. The only time I ever even saw him in trouble, including his kickboxing career, was when he was DEAD tired against Scott Smith.

I don't know if I've seen him hit enough to have an opinion but I wouldn't call it "shit".

I have seen many of them too. a few of them live. I dont remember him being rocked many times. But let's be clear. Being Rocked doesnt mean your chin is glass. This man has lost one time in both MMA and Kickboxing combined and his loss came after taking a long time off and coming back unprepared.

Well it will be his first fight back in over a year. He very well could lose. He is very inactive.

His stamina isn't very good either which is what got him KO'd by Scott Smith.

Cung always has a chance though, he throws tons of crazy kicks. I just think Vitor will be too much. Vitor is certainly a better striker than Frank Shamrock who was hanging in there just fine until his arm broke.

His stamina isnt bad. He was throwing a million kicks in that fight after a long layoff. That would tire anyone out.

Vitor is out of the fight. Wandy steps in to take his place.

    Discuss.

Who the fuck are you, the class Professor?

Wandy gets seriously fucked up in this fight. I cannot believe Dana and the UFC are still allowing Silva to fight. I guess 5 brutal KO's in his last 8 fights isn't enough. Now Cung Le has to kick his misshapen head off.

I'm down on that. I really enjoy watching Vitor fight, hopefully he's not out too long. Would like to see him fight winner of Munoz-Leben.
