Let me start off by saying that I do believe Gilbert Melendez will be a huge failure in the UFC. He might win a fight or two but overall he will be a failure because there is UFC and there is everything else . Ask Jake Shields your buddy. Ok So let's call UFC Class A Strikeforce is B class and all them bullshit japanese organization and all other small town crap is C class Bellator included. Jake Shields dominates B class. Steps up to A class and is 1-2 (Arguably 0-3)so far including a devestating knockout in mere seconds. Fedor. Dominates C class like none ever have before. Steps up to B class (not A mind you) and is 1-3. Pathetic. Cro Cop looks like a killer in C class. Steps up to A class and goes 3-5 in UFC. With the 3 wins coming against TOTAL scrubs. Wanderlei Silva a legend in Japan. In UFC ? Not so much 2-8 LOL So do you think Gilbert can cut it in the big leauges ? What about Overeem ? Nick Diaz ?
kalibre is somewhat right. crocop, fedor, noguiera and wanderlei all sucked since they moved over to stateside. they weren't just mediocre, they SUCKED. takanori gomi? not even that old, but he can barely win a second in the ufc. shields, i might cut him some slack since he dominated henderson, but he's on the verge of getting cut if he loses his next fight. diaz was hardly impressive in the ufc and all of a sudden, he's this killer in SF. he has improved, but he's bound to lose once he hops back over to UFC. melendez too.
Im just gonna assume youre being serious and play along with you cause like everyone else is saying this thread is pretty ridiculous Im gonna group wandy, cro-cop and fedor all in the same category. They were GREAT fighters during their times, but they sport has evolved past them. This doesnt mean they didnt make it in the big time. These fighters dominated during there era, MMA has quickly evolved to the point where everyone is extremely well rounded and has moved past them. This doesnt take away from their skills at all Any fan of MMA should know shields wasnt going to be great. He has 0 physical strength and thats been pretty obvious On what basis do you think Gilbert will fail? Hes an incredibly well rounded durable fighter id pick to hang with anyone in his weight class.
crocop was off roids and it clearly affected him. his takedown defense during pride days was simply pushing his opponents back. haha. obviously didn't work in the ufc w/o the roid strength. fedor was the biggest surprise imo, but seeing how poorly he looked vs. arlovski, i figured his days were numbered. plus, he's been competing in judo and sambo at the international level for years too, so i'm sure that had a lot of wear and tear on him. wanderlei - clearly on roids during pride days. in ufc he gets blitzed by ortiz and vitor. they're all around the same age and i'd pick both ortiz and vitor to beat him now too. watch wanderlei vs. dan henderson 1. wanderlei gets taken down in the opening moments but then gets up to dominate him. they have a rematch in LAS VEGAS, hendo knocks him the fuck out. melendez beat up a shot kwajiri, a pure grappler in aoki who doesnt know how to do anything besides pulling guard, and who else? a narrow win over clay guida? gilbert might have the goods, but we won't fully know until he fights maynard, edgar, henderson, or guida. chances are, he'll surely lose to one of them. shields - can't even convincingly win a round in the ufc. diaz - remains to be seen. on the same boat as gilbert. noguiera - on the same boat as wanderlei. BARELY beat tim sylvia. didn't even look good beating heath herring who he beat twice in japan.
You tell them joony. These pride fan boys are blinded by their love of stomps and high kicks. Truth is pride was a joke organization filled with cheating dives steroids pro wrestlers and etc etc. Only a couple decent guys actually fought there everything else there was basically pro wrestling made real.
i'm sure many of the UFC guys then would've lost in Pride. the talent was much superior in Japan, but at the same time, it was a different ball game. different rules, different commission (if there was any in japan) and who knows what it would be like right now if Pride never folded? bottom line, a handful of the stars that never fought in stateside didn't live up to their hype when crossed over and that's a fact.
to be fair, if crocop competed in the ufc when tim sylvia and arlovski were the top guys, i'm confident that crocop would've been the champ.
So lets see..Crocop and wandy were only good because they used steroids aside from the fact anyone in pride was able to use them if they wanted to, putting them on an even playing field They then come to the UFC off roids, just like everyone else, but the reason they lost is cause they werent using them? Stop it
so crocop seemingly at the peak of his career, comes to stateside and get his ass handed to him by C+ level guys. oh, and his upperbody looks much smaller compared to his days in japan. wanderlei silva sucked prior to going to japan and sucks again when he's back. there's also the ring/cage factor, which is a legitimate argument. a career ring fighter like crocop not having any success in the cage somewhat justifies his lack of success, but whatever happened to his awesome takedown defense (where he literally pushes away his opponents and takes a few steps back)?
oh, and how about that sokoudjou? a judo guy who looks like a weight lifter, goes over to japan and walks through top light heavies in arona and lil nog, but can hardly win a round in the ufc and strikeforce? and as much as i like him, yoshihiro akiyima too, who's gone like 13-1 in asia and is arguably 0-4 since coming to the ufc.
when was crocop taken down and dominated on the ground? all the fights he lost he was out struck because he no longer had a dominate striking game as the sport evolved
anyone can be knocked out, it happens, a 2 fight winning streak isnt anything to get excited over and asian fighters dont do well in america period, as talented as they are they have no physical strength
gonzaga took him down w/ ease. he got beat up on the ground before getting his head knocked off. kongo who's a fellow kick boxer took him down and busted him up. crocop really had no excuse for losing that fight if he was this supposed beast that everyone hyped him up to be. i'd have to admit, i was a bit surprised at how much he's regressed since he entered ufc, but looking back and also looking at how crappy former pride fighters have fared in stateside, it makes sense.
I know Shields got caught with the shot from Ellenberger, but I also thought he provided the most difficult test to GSP since Matt Hughes way back in 2004. (Serra was a lucky punch). Personally I'd still favor Shields over the most of the guys at 170 short of GSP. I think he beats Condit and Diaz head-to-head right now. I'm not sure I'd throw Shields on the "C" class scrap heap just yet. For the rest of the guys mentioned, they were all at various stages of the down side of their careers. Keep in mind, for Nog and Fedor, they WERE the "A" class in Pride. There was nothing, NOTHING on the UFC side that was better. The UFC's HW division was garbage.
im sorry this guy isnt the legend everyone makes him out to be hes best known for beating gracies which i guess at the time was a beat accomplishment, outside of that hes a highlight reel ko victim
he choked out rampage. so let's get this straight. pride fighters were awesome with an exception of asian fighters? haha
Crocop developed a great sprawl in Pride. In which fights of his did he simply push the person back? He did eventually learn to redirect people, but before that, he had a great sprawl, evading takedowns.
He choked out rampage who was nothing more then a wrestler at the time. Good job Stop giving credit for non credible achievements man. 6-12 months later rampage woulda throttled this guy over and over again just like wandy did
ok, what about guy metzer? he was an experienced veteran. what about belfort? i guess all gracies are just bums? the thing is this, you're saying pride was legitimate yet you discredit all the japanese fighters who were part of the promotion and made guys like silva, jackson, and crocop famous. so jackson was merely a wrestler and he all of a sudden evolved to this all around mma guy in his very next fight?
When did i mention rampage became great in his next fight? He progressively got better to the point where after a year of that fight he would destroy sak just like wandy did How were cro-cop and jackson made famous over beating japanese fighters? Wandy is very thick with them but i was never high on him anyhow The gracies werent good MMA fighters, period. They never have been they were just great BJJ specialists who road the coat tales of royce and as you can see they have faded away. What have metzger or belfort legitly every done over their career? Stop picking random fights off sherdog to try to argue with me
haha. fuck you. i dont need to go on sherdog to look up fights. metzger was one of the pioneers along w/ shamrock bros, rutten, and others. those guys all sucked too right? if you're gonna go w/ that argument, why dont you accept the fact that pride fighters sucked too and failed to evolve w/ guys that are competitive today? belfort's probably one of the most inconsistent guys in the game, but he's been at it since the earlier days of ufc and has been resurgent the last few years. oh i forgot, he beat an 'asian' guy in akiyama in his last fight, so he still sucks. crocop is so good, he got KOed by randleman, who was nothing more than a great collegiate wrestler on roids. belfort blitzed silva btw but i'm sure you'll say silva was a one dimensional kick boxer or some bullshit. go suck a dick you racist fuck.
Wow, this is getting ugly. Let's take a bit of a step back, guys. Crocop did indeed get KO'd by Randleman---who was a former UFC heavyweight champion, but Randleman was probably never better than he was in that tournament. Crocop wasn't expecting a wrestler to be that dynamic with his striking, but Randleman came in with a sound strategy: block the left high kick with his right arm, circle to his left, and throw the left hook. He also had the wheels to do so and get in close. There are few people as mobile and powerful as Randleman when he's 100%. Randleman's dad had just died apparently, and he was as charged up as a person could be. Case in point: the suplex he laid on Fedor. He was amped and got in a good one with Crocop, but these things happen when you're wearing 4-ounce gloves. In the rematch, Crocop choked him out with a guillotine.
