I think he interpreted 'public' to mean a few of his fellow sheep in the HBO flock.

Good move. Hopefully he doesn't lose the "Buy the fights, not the fighters" attitude.

Depends on what kind of contractual messes he's being left with, I guess.

Unfortunately that says more about the state of fight promoting in the United States, then anything else.

............meaning, once they have the TV rights secured, they don't much give a fuck about the live gate.

Canadian and European promoters are much better at bringing in live bodies to the fights.

Yes but still....this is the sort of fight that should have had people flocking to it even if the CIA were going around denying it was taking place. It should have, so to speak, sold itself. Guys like Bradley OR Alexander should have had people ringing them at 2Am asking them for tickets.

Now, it wasn't Floyd vs Zab, but it could have been a minor version of same.

I'm sure you've already seen it, or someone else has mentioned it, but last week it was announced the dude from Showtime was taking over.

I think for low tier fights (ones that don't include Manny or Floyd) they need to be (or at least attempting to) give some free tickets away to celebrities.

Somehow having celebrities at events validates it and you get enough celebrities at low tier boxing events next thing you'll have is people being brain washed into thinking boxing might actually be some kind of a professional sport worth checking out.

Or maybe what boxing needs is regional representation by each fighter. The same way all the other sports are repped by a certain city if each fighter did that then people in that city could get behind the fighter just because he's fighting for their city.

Agree with the sentiment, but I think it may be simpler than giving away free tickets to celebrities...I'm not so sure that celebrities don't already show up, but just don't get recognized by the director/camermen.

USA network was always good about getting a celebrity to sit in with the commentators for a round or so. ESPN2 does that a little, but it usually ends up with Teddy Atlas spouting his usual shit, not letting the guest get a word in, and then forcing the sit-in guest to agree by saying "Right, Celeb? Right?"

HBO does some celebrity hunting. Showtime? I don't think so. And none of the smaller programs do it as I recall...
