Admittedly I have not seen the original. The concept here is the specimen and its craft are discovered, and a team of mostly Norwegian guys extract the creature, which escapes to imitate the cast.
Which original are you talking about? The one in 1982 is a remake of The Thing from Another world, which is fucking terrific.
Word, and I would totally advocate that he watch the original before watching the new version since the new one is a prequel.
It is a prequel. This was the team that first found the ship, found the Thing and removed it from the ice. That's what they showed on the trailer. Plus I read a piece of an interview where the director stated his goal was to create a prequel that was both respectful to the original and where you would not notice much of a difference between this one and the 82 version. :scratcher: Kind of a dumb way of going about it but oh well. Guess the guy figured if you have an opportunity to waste a great opportunity why not take it.
You could pretty much see that from the trailer. Would have been better for them to just make this one a remake and hope a less lazy director would have done the prequel.
The trailer looked like the John Carpenter version to me, but with a chick playing Kurt Russell this time.
I havent seen the movie, but i believe they just called it a prequal, moved the location, and had the exact same thing happen in the 82 version happen in this movie. I will have to watch it.
I just watched the 1982 version and, yes, the current one is indeed a prequel. I dont know about the criticism levelled at it for being a similar story, though. What else could they have done? Its still a bunch of people in Antarctica, so of course the results of contact will be similar.
Watching it right now....this fucking movie SUCKS!!!!!! I hate movies that are dark...dark scenes, where you can hardly see what is going on...reminds me of another shitty movie...Aliens vs. Predator Requiem.
82 Thing was awesome. :: at GF bringing up the old film. You're one of those loons that goes into every Departed thread and brings up Infernal Affairs aren't you?
The original Thing was great for the practical effects they used. You watch it today and some of those effects still stand up today. I have not seen the new one but have been told it's all CGI. Disappointing. I think the lack of practical effects in Hollywood today is stifling creativity. If for nothing else, the LOTR trilogy showed showed how the two can be meshed to great success.
IA is much better than Departed. watching the 82 Thing right now, good movie indeed. gotta love kurt russel.
Interesting idea - let's make a prequel about what happened to the Norwegian Explorers before Kurt Russell & Co. found them. Unfortunately, it uses so many ideas, scenes, sets from the 1982 version, that it just gets bogged down. Good effort, 6/10
I watched the original after watching the new one. I had forgotten so much about the original. The new one is clearly a prequel and it does everything it can to prove it by showing the origin of everything Kurt and gang come across. The only thing they really changed was the spaceship stuff. Not sure why they did that or maybe there is a way to explain it, but in one movie it's buried and in the other it's not.
It is definitely a prequel and a worthy one. Since it didn't brought nothing new it feels inferior, but it is entertaining and links nicely with the John Carpenter 1982 version. I liked it. 7.5/10
