I really miss Mills Lane. He was not only a fair ref but very entertaining. I as well as many of you fans were devistated when he had his stroke. Presently being East Coast I think Steve Smoger is perhaps the best in the business. He is slowing down but I like Frank Cappacino who is on the East Coast a lot too. Any favorites out there? I liked Mitch Halpern. Shame he did what he did.

he was far from a good judge or commission man, but Larry Hazzard was a good ref

He can't be bought like Joe Cortez...that's why he's not in big fights.

Halpren was really good. Mills Lane seemingly tried to hard to make it a Mills Lane show in his fights. To paraphrase George Foreman Mills tried a little too hard to always be the most important man in the ring...othar than the fighters of course.

agREED on all of this. I thought Mills was a bit overrated, to be honest. A very good ref, but not far and away the best like many insisted was the case.

Halpern was a solid ref. He had a rough time keeping control in Miguel Angel Gonzalez' last LW title defense, against Angel Murphy. To his credit, he watched the tape w/ Marc Ratner (NSAC head at the time) and grew tremendoulsy as a ref from that point onward - at least until he took his own life.

Smoger, Bayless and Weeks are my favorite current refs.
