The experience was truly a fluke. The breakfast place wasn't all that close to the hotel I stayed at, but I didn't want to eat on the property because it was too expensive.

I left when Ali and company were still there and on my way out I asked the cashier (who I assume was the owner's wife, it was an older woman) how often Ali stopped in. I'd forgotten Ali lived in Scottsdale as well as Mike Tyson having a house there. In fact, Scottsdale is where Tyson's daughter tragically died a couple years ago.

The lady working the cash register also seated people and she got a huge kick out of watching me hold the door for Ali and company as well as listening to my conversation with my dad.

After Ali was seated in front of me, I called my dad (who was a big Ali fan) to tell him what transpired. I couldn't speak as loudly as I'd wanted so I walked out to the waiting area to give him the immediate details.

Anyway, as I paid my bill I asked the cashier how often Ali stopped in and she replied that was the first time she'd seen him in there but she knew he lived in town.

I'm happy to say I met him but truthfully it's a bit bittersweet in retrospect. I'd like to talk to him about his fights, life, things he's seen etc but that's obviously not possible. Therein lies the bit that's bittersweet. Feels like I'd met the shell of the man. It's strange to see him in his youth in contrast to his being essentially silent in his current form.

As far as meeting Roy, at the rate he's going he'll wind up in a similar state. I met Roy once and he seemed like a decent guy. I'd be curious to catch him now to see how much the past few years have humbled him.

My gran's almost certainly gonna die real, real soon & I keep putting off going to see her because what is there to say? I don't have the social agility to skirt round the issue well enough to make her feel better for my visit. I'll go tomorrow after work.

Sorry to hear that mate. It's a weird thing, I just feel weird talking about it, you know? Just reminds me of my own mortality, scares the fuck out of me.

Nothing to say about it, is there? There feels like no middle ground between cold-blase, maudlin & trite.

I run across roads, like literally belt it across to the other side, even when there are no cars about. Just freaks me out.

Ali's dead already as far as I'm concerned and I've felt this way since the mid 80s.

What made Ali, aside from his fighting talent, was his larger than life personality. When that was gone he was gone. Nowadays I just see a shell that was once inhabited by Muhammad Ali.

So his death, to me, would be sad in the sense that I'd feel for his family but it would be no big deal because I've greived over his death almost 30 years ago.

I predict that Floyd and Manny will fight next (assuming Marquez doesn't spoil the show). Too much money to be made. Floyd came back and fought Ortiz (southpaw with power) with the intention of fighting manny next.

    We will get our fight.

Floyd just made another gajillion squid fighting another no hoper, he's no reason to ever take a proper fight again.

Floyd's every bit the fighter of the naughties - a sociopathic legal hustler who got exorbitantly rich contributing nothing worthwhile.

Disagree. his pride will force him to fight Manny since the fans tend to think that manny is the P4P # 1. Also Floyd knows he can beat manny..Morales and Marquez gave the template.

I don't personally think Floyd has any sporting pride by this point. Beyond being undefeated and a smart business man who knows 'the game nah'm sayin?'.

notice he contributed everything worth a shit before he got offensively rich though. Much like private equity magnates had to build a capital base in sort of traditional business activity before they got to move into ravenous ponzi parasitism.

The parallel is complete. Occupy Wall street should include the Pac fight as part of their demands!

When did he first become "offensively rich " in your opinion?

Remember....he signed to fight manny and a date was set and then the whole drug test shenanigans...so instead he fought Shane and remained relatively inactive. Assuming now with even more money on the table, both sides will come to a compromise and make it happen.

My kids will not go to school and I will not work on the day he dies (If it's not a weekend); thereafter, I will not work and will keep the kids home on every anniversary of his birthday.

I named my son Centauri Ali.... Ali has meant a great deal to my family growing up and it will be a dark day when he goes....
