I cant find this anyplace else as of now. But on the ESPN ticker it said "Joe Frazier is deathly ill with liver cancer...they are giving him a short time to live"
Well he has been drinking for 30 years, and dressing like a pimp. That does catch up with you. Honestly, though, it does make me a bit sad. He may go before Ali, which seems so ironic. Maybe this is like Ali-Frazier 4? They may still be competing for who can last longer on this planet.
I couldnt really picture ali out living this guy, but looks like its going to happen guess the loss of a legend is creeping up on us. Too bad boxing isnt worth a shit now a days we might get a nice day of fights out of it on ESPN or something
I can assure you all that Joe had the better retirement of both men. It's a hard-knock life, Joe worked hard and played hard. He's not going to beat the cancer, so I don't want to sit here with all this "get well soon, Champ", BS that people go on with. Best of luck to him anyways, I hope he goes easily and is re-born anew with some handspeed and a D.
Nah. Joe is a true Baptist redneck sharecropper, not some Bourgeois fool with women issues who had time for pretentious BS. At least Joe never employed a fool like Drew Brown to make insults about Joe "putting bread" on Ken Nortons table. Personally, I think the fact that Joe was able to enjoy retirement and didn't end his fighting days surrounded by hanger-ons and nobodies is enough of a bonus for him.
"And Frazier equals the series once and for all as Ali crosses over the other side....scores were 97-94, 97-93 and a very wide 100-90 at the time of the ascension ..Frazier announced his own immediate death after the scores were announced, quelling rumours of a "best of 5" rematch.....From Bethsheba Medical Center, I'm Jim Lampley.
In all the documentaries I've seen about Ali/Frazier, and even when those two met at more advanced ages and Ali was already in the throes of his Parkinson's, Frazier had not forgotten or forgiven Ali for what he had said and done leading up to their fights. Joe plays nice when he needs to, but he is on record making all kinds of comments about essentially being pleased that Ali is in this sorry physical state whereas Joe was (at least until now) relatively healthy. Joe Frazier genuinely sees it as something of a victory. "Look what I did to him." He still has an ongoing visceral hatred for Ali. So although I made the initial comment in jest, I think that Frazier truly has seen his healthy and extended retired life as a constant reminder about who "truly" won the battle. Joe is a simple man. Where Ali got religion and I believe truly sought forgiveness for how he tortured Frazier in those years, Joe Frazier harbored the hatred and anger for decades and did not want to grant Ali peace of mind. He may have said otherwise at some point, but I don't believe it. Even Frazier's outgoing voicemail message on his cellphone (to this day I believe) has a "Look what I done to Ali" vibe to it. His hatred is such that he is proud in his belief that he essentially crippled Muhammad Ali. So yeah, it would not surprise me if in a way this is a twisted metaphorical final battle. I really think Joe Frazier cringes, with disgust, at the notion of Ali attending his funeral. I truly believe that.
Joe has been living above his gym in Philly for a while now..he has little money as far as I know. Last saw him at a Bernard Hopkins appreciation parade in downtown Philly and Joe was dancing like a hip hopper on a float..funny site...but he was having fun even if he did look silly.....GS
Looking silly at the "appreciation parade" of a "legend" who back in the day would have been forced to fight Joe.....and Joe would have wiped him out in 2 rounds, this "legend". I hope Hopkins "appreciates" that he would have lasted fuck all time with Joe Frazier. Joe must have been stuck for money to attend that shit.

Oh, well, I suppose if you want to weigh it up that way.....Ali slobbers his food and forgets where he is, mid-meal. I think Frazier came out of it better, in terms of his quality of life, if not his standard of living. Foreman came out of it better than either. I also think that guys like Ali, Frazier, McClellan "damaged" boxing in a very indirect sense, people look at that and think "nah, fuck it, I'll sit on my stool rather than fight on"
Bob Foster vs Joe Frazier Archie Moore vs Rocky Marciano etc etc etc....all the proper 175lbrs used to try their hand at the Heavies back then. Bernard wouldn't be getting any free rides in Ontario in front of adoring crowds, I can tell you.
I didn't get that either. Hopkins fought as defending middleweight champ most of his career.at an almost consistent 160. Joe was the Heavyweight champ of the world. Would Joe have ever in his whole career have fought in the middleweight elimination contest like Hopkins did ending with Tito? Don't get it. But I haven't had my second bottle of wine yet...maybe that will make things seem clearer..GS
Joe is known to do the outragious and silly here in Philly. He oftens used to wear pimp hats all the time and drank a lot , often stopped while driving by the cops, but he got passes. He was at the very large parade to honor his friend , not to make any money. . Had to be there to see him dance..he was putting it on for the crowd...he loves that stuff..I meant no disrespect to him, he is one of my favorites, just who he is..loves attention and doing the city circuit in his better days. GS
He's been at light-heavy plenty time now, back in the day, he'd have cashed out at 200 rather than getting his title taken off him for peanuts by a younger guy far better than Pascal.
Back in the day he probably wouldn't have won the light heavyweight title in his 40s. He way he's forced to fight Frazier, come off it.
IF IF IF he's the 175 champ back then, he would have run into whoever was the Heavyweight champ. I mean...Moore got into fighting Heavyweight champs both before and after he won the light-heavyweight title...
I know....but I am merely looking at Bernard Hopkins as a 175lb champ. If he had picked up that title in the late 1960's or very early 1970's, then Frazier was the next logical step.
