I think it's more that Olivares didn't just beat these guys, he didn;t just defeat them, he beat them half to death... Rose was a good fighter, he'd beaten Harada for the title, and he'd defended it twice against Castillo (who was also quite good) and Alan Rudkin (who was at least a solid challenger) ... Olivares didn't squeak by on a decision, he absolutely killed Rose, finished him, really finished his career... Rudkin, who had come frustratingly close in title shots against Rose and Harada, was out cold in 2 rounds, down three times... It is the decisiveness of those victories, how easy he made it look that, in my opinion, shows his greatness... and then there's Pimentel, who was avoided like the plague by the various champions of the 60s... Olivares beat the crap out of him as well... At his run at 118, Olivares was clearly fantastic... I think a lot of the stuff after that is just gravy, really... two KOs of Bobby Chacon, one of those "good losses" against Arguello in a classic fight... a real nice, back from the dead rematch win over Art Hafey (another avoided guy who never got a title shot) and then he beat some Japanese guy nobody ever heard of (LOL) and got a 126 belt for a second time... after that, he's all done and loses as much as he wins... but for a stretch of 70 fights, he's pretty goddamn ridiculous... And, both at their absolute best, I think he is clearly the better fighter, the more special fighter

    you're a moron

how many rounds did you give Paez? which ones? you must be impressed by the skill of making threatening gestures and then throwing flurries at elbows

That's a 117-111 fight with Whitaker clearly goofin a bit for fun

    Whitaker>Johnson all day, every day

Mayweather won ONE round, the round where he scored a knockdown

other than that, he was beaten up

Ramirez won 3 in the first fight after Whitaker broke his hand, he won zero in the rematch

Paez got a lot of credit for nothing

you brought up the Paez fight... you opened the door... you think he won FOUR OR FIVE ROUNDS? Tell us which ones

Paez won 4 or 5 rounds if you are blind and dumb

you need to look up the word "pretentious" because it makes no sense in this context

    at BEST, 3 rounds

pretentious would indicate a person who is making a show of something, putting on airs

    I'm certainly NOT doing that

Pernell Whitaker really WAS an all-time great fighter

Name two better lightweights, go ahead... seriously, since you think it's pretense to suggest that Whitaker is either #1 or #2 all time... it should be easy for you to come up with two guys... hell, if it is as ridiculous as you seem to indicate, you should have no problem coming up with 6 or 7

take time from your busy schedule of typing "marcellus johnson", "gay" and "faggot" and give your learned opinion on this subject

hows about you actually tell me which 9 rounds whitaker won in that fight, since you seem to enjoy rewatching the boring dope fiends fights.

hardly... I am actually trying to talk about boxing with you

I know that you don't actually do that ever, but I thought it'd be fun to see if you had anything besides "gay" and 'Marcellus Johnson" and "sergio Martinez is awesome" to say

Yeah, there's a thrill-a-minute fighter, Martinez... run-around-run-around... and LEAP! and CLINCH! and "break it up, guys" and awkward leap and hop backwards again and take it form the top... yeah, what a technician

to claim whitaker was a quality fighter is one thing, to claim you enjoyed watching him is subjective and more people than not would vote 'no'. martinez knocking out williams was more exciting than any moment of whitakers career.

you counter subjectivity with more subjectivity

Whitaker had more one-punch KOs than Martinez, if that's what gets you through the night

Well, to claim you didn't enjoy watching him is also subjective. But I think if you enjoy watching boxing at its best, you enjoy watching Whitaker.

I'm not personally a fan of Whitaker, nothing against him, it's just that I really like attacking fighters.

I can see the appeal though, some of the best defense ever, and for those that like defense as much as I like offense, I guess Whitaker is your man.

i dont claim to have seen every whitaker fight, but ive seen plenty and the only one i would bother rewatching is his victory vs julio chavez. to paraphrase what the greatest promoter in the history of boxing siad, "there would have been no fight that night if not for chavez."
