saw (most of) it yesterday. for me it was kinda undermined and ruined by the final 15 minutes, but for the whole movie up until that i was impressed. sterling performances by naomi watts and tim roth, gruellingly sad.
Similar thoughts for me. I think I have an issue with movies in which non-sympathetic, completely irredeemable characters constantly have the upper hand over seemingly sympathetic characters. It's why I've never been a fan of Rob Zombies horror movies, despite him having an obvious talent at making them.
my problem with it was all the meta-film, self-reflexive, sophomoric theorising. when he started rewinding the movie, and the dialogue with the audience became ever more heavy-handed, it became clear that haneke was ultimately just advancing some boring theoretical point. if i want some film theory i'll read an essay. go ahead and make a movie about movies if you want, but it still has to be a good movie.
