Trinidad had been inactive for two and a half years going into that bout with Mayorga. Tough for me to compare those fights.

Yeah because Joppy was far away, with his hands down and tito was lunging in with shots and still connecting. Not only was joppy not very good, he was a stupid fighter.

Forget about how good/sharp he looked, I'm asking you to just compare the form of his hooks.

I think they look literally heavier against Vargas and Joppy, watch those fights objectively and tell me I'm wrong.

One thing about Vargas and Joppy is that they both had no respect for Tito's power. Both guys repeatedly said no way this guy is moving up in weight and will be stronger than me. It's not a coincidence that both were dropped and dropped often.

Tito post Hopkins had less power. It took him a million shots to get Mayorga out of there. With his anvils he would have had him doing the phone dance and on his back in 2 rounds.

That was a trick though. When you see the punches you can take them. Either way, Tito had him reeling late in the first round.

You guys make it seem like Trinidad knocked everyone out early until Bernard.

Oscar damn near got him out of there with a single shot. Oscar's hook hurt Mayorga way more than the free shot Mayorga gave Tito.

by the end of the round the man was wobbling like the holy ghost entered his body. His corner screaming at him to never do that shit. Yeah, by the end of the round, Tito got his respect. And by the end of the fight Mayorga was kissing his gloves.

I'd like to see him try that trick when Tito had his anvils on. Mayorga would've been sent into orbit.

Power is the last thing to go...unless you get caught stacking your wraps of course...then its the second to last thing to go.

All i know is prior to Tito, Mayorga wasnt known for being dropped. After Tito, the man has fallen more times in the ring than my grandma in the shower.

It's not that he was past his prime, he was off for 2 years. His timing wasnt the same and he still gave mayorga the beating of his life. Nothing to brag about, but still.

Pre-Hopkins, there was something entirely unnatural about Trinidad's punches. It was one of the reasons I was such a fan of his - his seemingly amazing ability at that time to put hurt on his opponents.

As experts of this physical world, our understanding was violated by the damage he was able to do.

Post-Hopkins, it simply wasn't the case. He was suddenly playing by the same rules.

There's not a whole lot more I can say about it.

As a side thought cause I'm old and my mind wanders..at the time of Hops Tito Tito was a strong favorite. Previous to that fight including the Joppy fight Hops used his old inside dirty tricks Philly Dawg style. I actually predicted on another site,,lol(for you Mex) that Hops woud change his style and totally box , which he did with his lead right demolishmnet/breakdown of Tito. Point being the way Hops totally had open season witht he right and with the footwork being top draw..Tito had no chance there and no one really fought him with this type of masterpiece.
I obviously go to all the East Coast big fights and Tito Mayorga to me was boring as Mayorga was totally outclassed in a boxing sense and looked somewhat like a fool .. even though Tito was not like the puncher he was against Nando.
    Just some thoughts...geritol time...con su permiso....GS

Exactly. The anvils would have crushed Mayo's jaw just like every other one they hit.

So basically an extra layer of guaze and tape is the secret to building a great puncher???

Its absurd. And the examples you bring up hold no water.

You mention Hopkins and Wright. Two fighters who were barely hit at all by Trinidad and you compare them to Vargas, Joppy, and Thiam, 3 guys who were there to be hit and were hit REPEATEDLY by Trinidad.

Mayorga too was hit repeatedly by Trinidad and prior to Tito had never been seriously hurt by anybody. Your gonna sit there and say that Trinidad's power didnt have the same effect on Mayorga tht it did on those other guys who got hit repeatedly by Trinidad?? Your argument just doesn't make any sense. And then you go on about how Trinidad's wraps looked heavy or something. Thats just ridiculous in itself.

I say trivial because thats what it was. It was a dispute over what the correct amount of guaze and tape a fighter is allowed to use. A vague dispute at that, which years later its plain as day to see that alot of it was exagerations and unfounded truths, especially the whole "wet layers of tape and guaze" crap...

If what Trinidad did makes that much a difference in punching power as your making it out, then more trainers would be up on that "dark secret" but I guess only Papa Trinidad was smart enough and aware enough to know about such a trick, right?:wack:

    This issue is ridiculous.

    Yeah, he really is.

From here on out, the pre Hopkins Trinidad shall now be known as Anvil Boy.
