How about Golovkin? He just knocked the shit out of Lujuan Simon.

If you're going to go by those ratings, then I guess Macklin is a better fight. He's #3

Looking at the ring top 10, it just hit me. MW is garbage.

It's a fucking shame Martinez either chooses not to, or can't get, any high profile fights. There's not even any on the horizon, really. There's some, apparently, holding out hope that he faces Jr., but honestly, to me, that's not even a tough fight for him, and he'd get zero credit for beating that fraud at this point.

My guess is he's hoping to repeat what Hopkins was able to do, which was to feast on guys moving up, but I think he's barking up the wrong tree if he thinks that's going to happen. Pacquiao certainly will not be fighting there, and neither will PBF.

And as far as 154, nobody really stands out yet.

If he does have an HBO contract, besides the chance to fight nobodies for the same amount of money he'd get fighting other top guys, it's easy to see why he has no plans to go to 168 when you figure that all of those guys are with showtime.

I wouldn't mind a rubber-match with Williams at this point, but I guess in truth, some of these other lesser known guys might deserve a shot more than Williams does.

Williams needs a good performance badly.

MW just isn't that good. We have a bunch of up and comers and no real names. I'd peg Golovkin as the next real legit guy coming up. He did knock the shit out of Bute and beat Dirrell in the AMs.

All the divisions are bar their very very best top fighters.

Martinez has come along at just the WRONG time. 5-10 years ago he would have Hopkins, Vargas, Stinky Oscar, Joppy, Holmes etc to choose from across a 154-160 range.

Guys like Reid, he would have fucked Reid up, earned a packet and gotten rave reviews.

Vargas he beats up, post Hopkins Trinidad too. He'd toy with Oscar at 154.

All of those were good money fights and good matchups that would have whetted our appetite.

Instead, he's lumbering around trying to chase down Barren Darren Barker.

The one thing I will say is there is a lot of young talent at MW. It could be a real good division again soon.

Yeah, but it's always nice to have that process kickstarted by a dominant champ who gets beaten off top-spot. Sort of heralds the era. Super 6 is an example....when Ward/Froch "arrives" its going to be so overdue as to feel like an anti-climax, and then there is the spectre of Bute the Cute up in Candida, so its still "unfinished".

I just saw that, the kid looks pretty good. I also watch some am stuff, like the Bute and Dirrell fights.

His fight against Ouma was one of my favorites this year. Golovkin got hit A LOT, but it was an impressive show of will watching him pile on the pressure late and gradually roll over Ouma. Both fighters showed a great work rate too.

Macklin is a scrub. He's parlaying that loss to the Spurm Fail into a title shot vs Martinez. Well, you know these whiteys are always getting title shots they don't deserve. Macklin is a MW Cooney, just with no power and even less variety. He doesn't deserve this. His best win is a points win over an ANCIENT Yory Boy Campas. He's an average pressure fighter and if Martinez struggles with him then that should put paid to Marquez lofty pfp ranking.

Yeah, he's quite mediocre. Both he and Lee should box off to see who's less ordinary - I might pick Barker to beat either. Still, his fight with Moore was very memorable.

It's NOT as if these Guys R Standing in Line to Fight Martinez...Chavez Jr., Canelo AND Sperm ALL have Titles...They're ALL Headlining Cards MINUS the Risk that a Martinez Fight would Bring...& Abraham is Moving Back to MW DEFEATED, w/his Tail btwn his Legs...

Surely U're Not Blaming Martinez in this Case, Because REED has No Doubt that Sergio would JUMP On a Bout w/Any of those Cats...

I would pick Baker over Lee or Macklin.

But like you guys have already said, I don't see those guys clamouring for a fight with Serge either. I'm sure Martinez would jump at the chance of fighting any of them, they're all basically gimme's, and some of them would be well paid gimme's like Chavez JR or the chunky little ginger.

160 is so weird now, you've got Martinez, a bunch of high profile scrubs, and then some obscure guys who seem pretty good like Golovkin and Pirog.

Golovkin SEEMS good but he's from Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan.

HBO will sanction Macklin as a viable opponent on the grounds that he bascially already BEAT Sturm, and that if it wasn't Germany, this is basically a unification fight. :shit:

Macklin is JC CHavez Jr without an insane weight advantage. He's an honest worker, a volume fighter without much in the line of 1-punch power, or elite handspeed.

He's a blue-collar guy probably not even on Mickey Wards level.

Macklin is a worthy opponent for anyone. I hope he doesn't go all gun ho and conserves his energy, if he is to meet martinez, but I think his style will suit sergio.

I'm not blaming him at all, I know for a fact Canelo or JCC Jr don't want anything to do with Martinez. Abraham would fight him though, and what does it matter if he has lost? He been fighting some of the best 168lbers. There is no shame in that. I don't see Martinez trying to fight any of the Super 6 guys. He's about as undersized as Abraham was at 168.

Maybe you didn't intend it, but that's exactly what he is. If I was a big-league promoter who wanted to give my guy an exciting but limited test to entertain the home crowd, Macklin would be it. Mack will bring a lot of pressure but Martinez hits way harder than Sturm and is cuter to boot.

I heard during the Golovkin vs LaJuan fight that this Macklin vs Martinez is very close to being finalized.

    Actually, I totally disagree.

SMW has a terrible historical rep, despite the fact that some of the very best fighters of the last 25 years have campaigned there. 168 looks good right now because it is competitive, with half a dozen guys at the top end all capable of giving each other decent scraps.

But the talent pool is very thin. Bute, Ward, Kessler and Froch: the best 168lb-ers out there right now. Not one of them wins a single fight aganst any of Watson, Eubanks, Benn, RJJ, Toney, Hopkins, Collins, Nunn or Calzaghe. That is 'the standard of itself' you speak of.

Until the late mid-90s it was a non-entity

Since then, in all its forms, it has been a top-heavy and completely uninteresting division... When have there ever been 4 solid guys at the top?
