Pavlik has split with his old trainer and is moving to CA to train under Robert Garcia.

Apparently, his old trainer saw this coming and was ready to walk away anyways.

I think it's the best thing for Pavlik. In CA, he will presumably be more focused on boxing and have less distractions. And I can't imagine he wouldn't get better sparring and instruction too.

    Wtf, why Garcia?

I thought it was just cholos that went to Garcia by association, surely no one thinks he's actually a good trainer?

There's something to be said of his methods that prove to be effective.

I just question how disciplined Pavlik will be in his camp. One thing Garcia is not very good at, is babysitting.

The reason he's going to Garcia, though - it's just the way Cameron Dunkin rolls. Garcia is his flavor of the month, so he's sending more and more of his fighters to him. Used to be Don House, and Kenny Adams before him, etc.

If Pavlik couldn't keep his shit together in friggin Ohio, how's he going to cope with the temptations in California? How long do you guys think it will be before Pavlik is out drinking and getting in trouble? My guess, not long.

once he wanders off from garcia's gym up Pacific Coast Highway toward the beach he'll see bars, liquor stores and strip clubs.

I generally think that if a fighter thinks he'll be better off with a new or specific trainer he will be. Oscar Suarez was the exception. It always seemed like he was kryptonite to his own fighters.

Aha, I see, so it's a manager thing.

What do you think is good about Garcia's training methods etc?

Pavlik should move to some Muslim country where drinking is illegal.

Bad news. I just went on Pavlik's twitter and this is what it said.

My guess is he's counting on not knowing anyone who would be a bad influence on him, and surrounded by trainers and other boxers who can help him get motivated.

The road to hell, of course, is paved with good intentions.

yes. i know it seems strange. but you have to figure there's distractions in Ohio, where everyone knows him, his friends and family live, etc.

Pavlik is done. He no longer has the passion to train or fight.

He should just retire and stop kidding himself

It's good he'll be training with Garcia. Nothing but class acts around his gym.

I always liked Tackie. That was a hell of a hook, Garcia's arms were flailing everywhere.

Pavlik needs somebody like Ann Wolfe to pound him into submission. I'm not sure what Garcia would do for him outside of getting him some decent sparring.

Maybe he'll learn better hygiene habits and won't catch a staph infection every time he scratches himself.

When he was on the way up he didn't seem to have any problems with work ethic. Of course hunger plays a part in that but it wasn't conditioning alone that caused his losses to Hopkins and Martinez. (although it probably contributed)

He was never very good at handling angles. I'm sure for the first few fights of his "comeback" it won't be a problem as they'll match Pavlik with guys who will stand in front of him.

The other deficiencies will still need to be addressed even if he remains sober and dedicated.

Pavlik's never had very good hand-speed, but I think it's a major weakness of his at this stage, and will make him an easy mark for anyone not inclined to fight him head on.

Still, I think people are under-estimating him when you consider that under the worst of circumstances, as far as conditioning and being a drunk, he still came very close to beating Martinez had it not been for the cut. In the least, he showed the capacity to do so.

say what you want about Garcia but he gives results. All his fighters except Margarito are coming along. I like his little brother MIkey, Rios, Donaire.

I don't know about Pavlik but I guess the change of scenary might help.

I do like Garcia as a trainer more than when he was a fighter.
