MMA can put anybody in a main event. Kimbo was selling out arenas in MMA in boxing guy can't even get on ESPN2 and fights in bingo halls. <object width="640" height="360"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ibw8G7iqmDE&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ibw8G7iqmDE&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></embed></object>
I always wondered what Dana Whites angle was with Kimbo. I felt that it kind of degenerated the orgs image letting clowns like that fight for him.
Brilliant video. In fact Kimbot Slice didn't even lose to Sean Gannon in a street fight, he lost to him in some sort of a Basketball Hall With Frat Boys In Attendance sort of fight.
it does make mixed martial arts seem like a farce when at one point a kimbo slice vs james toney fight could have done big ppv numbers with each guy making more dollars that evening than all but 10 guys in the sport make yearly.
"Bag Beater. Kimbo a Bag Beater. A bag beater in de yard why vess bums kalfornee dreamin mommaz and de poppaz, Fat Azz Momma Cass a betta fita than Kimbo "Bag Beater" Sprice, hold up, ah voyz ma ping here, tune in on holla-tube or gayspace.com and see deez so-call fites....homeless crackers brought in, Rocky Lockridge emoshnly unstable bums, beaten down for frat boyz, reality tv garbage. Bag Beater. Ah saydagin, bag beater"
It makes it even worse when you realize that Kimbo single-handidly brought down Elite XC(Pro Elite). The company was all about Kimbo and then he gets knocked out by a below average fighter in Seth Petruzelli and the company stops operating. Basically Kimbo was completely exposed after 4 pro MMA fights. Wanna bet his boxing run last longer? He's already up to 3 with another fight scheduled in February.
Novelty acts are in both sports. If Kimbo had gone to boxing right away, he probably wouldn't have had big crowds to his initial fights, too. After losing in boxing, his subsequent mma shows would have been much smaller than they actually were. I like Kimbo. I liked watching his fights on youtube and I liked watching him on TUF and in mma fights. There's just a big difference between liking someone and believing or expecting them to be any good.
Yeah, they can't since he was already completely exposed in MMA. Boxing isn't getting the "internet sensation" version of Kimbo. They are getting the version that was knocked out in 40 seconds by Petruzelli, stopped in TUF by Roy Nelson, and cut by the UFC after being stopped by Matt Mitrione. The bottom line is that Kimbo was KO'd by a complete can in MMA. Eventually it will happen in boxing. But because of the ability to pad records in boxing, it will take longer. That's all.
Him being hyped and spotlighted in MMA makes you realise what's wrong with MMA, and likewise his record being padded against guys that look like they are more suited to data entry than boxing makes you realise what's wrong with boxing. I wonder what Kimbo is hoping to achieve in boxing, now that he was exposed long ago, there's no buzz about him, he can't be making much money at all from these fights can he?
I'm pretty sure he made more in MMA but i think if Kimbo can get on the undercard of one big fight he'll make decent coin. He just needs to pad that record a bit more. It wouldn't surprise me at all. Mainstream boxing "fans" aren't immune to freakshows. Think of Butterbean. Not to say anybody took him seriously but Kimbo might be able to find a similar slot.
I agree with your sentiment, but wasn't it Gary Shaw that first promoted Kimbo in MMA? And by the way, Gary Shaw also said he thought he could make Kimbo a HW Boxing champ. :giggle::giggle:
Haha, yeah you might be right about Shaw, and did he also say that about being a boxing champ? Shaw or no Shaw, it's still crazy the way Elite XC lapped that shit up, but also kind of sad that their business was built around Kimbo, he loses and they go bust. Absolutely bizarre really.
Agreed, I'm surprised he or someone else isn't trying to generate more hype, as boxing isn't exactly immune to a freak show.
They were idiots, plain and simple. There is no fighter on the planet that is going to carry an entire promotion.
