Which would still be more than all of the people alive who will remember Mark Johnson, including his great-great grandchildren

The idea that most people would have been ok with Lewis/Holy II being scored for Holy is some of the biggest bullshit you've ever served up, and that's saying something

its true. if not for the first fight there would not have been any uproar. it just would have been a close fight that went in the favor of holyfield. you think people would have been all over ESPN crying about what a robbery it was?

I'm going to rewatch both fights this weekend with the commentary off. It's been a long time, and I'm open to someone trying to convince me otherwise.

Why? It removes bias. It makes me base my observations off of what I see.

I don't see any of that as being hogwash. You'd think you have a vested interest in what some yammering commentator says as opposed to what you actually see in the ring.:tick:

It also removes important sounds, like punches landing.

I remember a few writers scoring the rematch for Holyfield by a round or so. Most saw it as a close victory for Lewis, 7-5 or so. Quite a few people had it a draw. Certainly not a wide margin as the official cards were (I think one of the judges scored it 10-2 Lewis, which is ludicrous).

Lewis should have won the first fight 8-4, and I had the rematch as a draw.

I don't really see why you can't trust your eyes to see if a punch landed.

Holyfield may have won 7 rounds over two fights.

Yep, and he did that in the second Bowe fight alone.

Lewis outlanded him like 2-1 in every round. A 10-2 scorecard for Lewis is probably easier to justify than an 6-6 card. Did Holyfield win any rounds clearly? I don't really remember anymore, but I don't think so.

I guess you'd rather listen to cheerleaders than decide with your own brain. THAT'S weakminded! It's cool.

Lewis won the second Holy fight handily. I can see maybe a 7-5 fight but a draw or a Holyfield win is just not on. Nonsense.

No, the cheerleaders don't influence my scorecard. With my superior mind, I get to enjoy the roar of the crowd, the sound of crisp punches landing and I still end up with a fair scorecard.

I guess if you enjoy watching silent film in the dark by yourself that's all good too.

I don;t get the whole "influenced by the commentators" bullshit... If you know so little about boxing that you think Jim Lampley understands it more than you do, than your opinions are worthless anyway. If anything, I tend to instinctively react negatively to the commentators, rather than parroting them. I like the sound to be on so I can hear the sounds of punches being landed, the corner giving instructions, the crowd, all of that... Those things add flavor to the experience. I'm not going to turn the sound off just because some jackass on TV has an agenda. I'm quite confident (and my scoring of fights over the years seems to lend credence) that I'm not influenced by the commentators. I would think most of us would be that way, we are all guys who have watched the sport for decades, we aren't casual observers, If you are still having trouble deciding a round because Jim Lampley yelled "LOOK AT OSCAR!!! HE WANTS TO FIGHT!!!!" or "ERIK MORALES! BIG RIGHT HAND!!!!!" during it, then you need help.

Exactly right. If I had problems with that, I'd never be able to watch Aussie boxing because the commentary is the most biased you will ever hear anywhere towards the hometown fighters.

Seriously, everyone here has seen enough boxing to be able to intelligently score a round without worrying about 'influence' from the commentary of all things. Watching a fight with the sound off in the most pointless exercise I've ever heard of. It is an arguement only brought up when someone can't believe that people have differing opinions on a fight and has to attribute it to something else.

God knows, it's not like they could be wrong. This is the internet after all.

Same. An excellent way of ensuring that you are scoring a fight properly is to take everything Jim Watt says on SKY and to completely reverse it. The man has simply lost his marbles; he is a grating old cunt and he can't score a fight for shit.

Must be the after-effects of what he sponged against Alexis Arguello:lol:

If you hate Jim Watt, you will enjoy that fight.
