I really liked it---for a superhero movie. If you're expecting Hamlet, you're bound to be disappointed. It could be worse: Elektra, Daredevil, Hancock, etc. I thought Chris Evans did a very good job as did Hayley Atwill. Hugo Weaving is always a great bad guy, and Sebastian Stan did a really good job as Bucky. In fact, he may have been the best part of the movie. The Invaders were really the Howling Commandos minus Nick Fury, but they were great. Beautiful cinematography, great costume design, really authentic-looking scenery, and a story that improved on the comic book origin to an extent. Even the ending was well-done. Perhaps too many people dislike the patriotism and idealism because of today's cynicism, but it was a different time. Joe Johnston did a great job as director. It's a story with an expected ending if you've read the comics. If not, the ending is surprising and a bit shocking. Man out of time. Sorry guys, I disagree. It wasn't as flashy or funny as Iron Man, but I liked it more. He's just a good person who becomes a superhero. Yes, the battle scenes were a bit clunky and I would have liked to have seen him throw the shield more, but that's life.
First off a lot of the movie was just plain cheesy. The battle scenes were horrid and goofy looking. Just a bunch of explosions thrown together. The movie had zero realism of the batman movies which I really liked. The secondary characters were developed extremely poorly. It just felt like the whole thing was very very rushed and the movie was put together with duct tape.
Schmidt was a Nazi scientist, Erskine was the one who developed the super soldier serum, Peggy Carter was the love interest, and Bucky was his childhood friend. Which one was poorly developed? If you felt it was rushed, perhaps you're mistaking that for the tempo of the movie, which does speed up and slow down in parts. We're probably just going to disagree.
word. He's ridiculous. Marvel ONLY made a film about him because they wanted to make Avengers...and of course he has to be included. CHeesy superhero....just his name alone proves that point.
That's cool. There were parts of Elektra, Daredevil, and Hancock that I liked as well. The point is, a hero that clicks with you might not click with others. I read Captain America comics starting when I was 6 or 7. He was part of The Avengers and he had his own book. I liked both. Perception is key. If I hadn't read Captain America comics as a kid, I might not have liked it as much and perhaps might have seen it as being way too jingoistic and nationalist, which you can't really help with the subject matter. I also saw the Captain America tv movies starring Reb Brown way back in the day ('78 or so). Now THOSE were bad. Still, I was a kid and they seemed neat at the time. I was really relieved to see that they didn't screw anything up really badly in this most recent adaptation. It was a long time coming in my mind, and they combined the regular Marvel and Marvel Ultimate tellings of the character fairly successfully.
True. Personally I thought Elektra and Daredevil were beyond bad. IMO they were no better than Halle Berry's "Catwoman". I just wouldn't classify Hancock in the same group...but that's just me. Agreed on the fact that unless you were a fan of the comics you'd probably not appreciate Captain America. I found it dull. Then again...some people hate Thor and I found it very good.
I liked Thor as well. I started reading these comics just over 30 years ago, and it's neat to see screen adaptations. The only live action Thor was in one of the Incredible Hulk tv movies. Other than that, they had a version of Thor on Hercules - The Legendary Journeys. Meh, to each his own.
Thor was shit-hot. It stuck to the legend - gives the great impression that Thor was inhumanly powerful (and got rid of the Donald Blake persona which Marvel did anyways) Iron-Man and Iron-Man II were great, if not a little bit 'Transformersesque'. Spider-Man was okay up until the 2nd movie when they unmasked him and gave a reason to have Kirsten 'Ugly' Dunst in the 3rd movie Hulk I never had a problem with - although a LOT of people did. And the reason they did is exactly what Buddy stated earlier: perception. If you grew up reading the comic and only watching the lame-ass 70s TV series, then you'd know he was 7-10' tall, 900lb, virtually unstoppable, could leap 200ft in the air, be impervious to bullet and artillery, etc, etc The follow-up, 'The Incredible Hulk', they got crack-on. Fantastic Four - both movies could have been so much better...but I found them okay. I watched 'Rise Of The Silver Surfer' again the other day as it was on TV and it holds up pretty well... Captain America - it was okay, but it focussed on the early days and not the Silver or Bronze Age versin which everyone knows.
I think the current Captain America, Captain America and Bucky, and Avengers comics are some of the most enjoyable out today. He is the undisputed leader of the Avengers so of course they had to make a film about him if they want to do an Avengers film. With that said, I didn't care for the film that much either. It was just kind of there, but didn't really bring much to the table. It felt like they were just putting something out for the sake of putting something out since the Avengers film was in the works. I agree with the Daredevil film sucked sentiment. The ridiculous jumping around by Daredevil, Electra, and Bullseye really seemed fake. With that said Daredevil is a very enjoyable comic as well (the current one). It's too bad they did such a poor job on the film. BTW: there was a thread a while back on who would win between the Avengers and the X-Men; in April it's happening.
I agree with you. This film & Rise of The Planet of The Apes were the most fun I had at the movie theater in 2011. I think Captain America was superior to THOR and it is this character (not Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, etc) the one I am most looking forward to watch in the Avengers movie. The film was well made, the acting was good, the direction was good and the script was better than your average superhero movie. Heck, even knowing Cap's fate was going to be an ice tomb for decades and come back for bigger and better battles, I became a little emotional at the climax because of the loss of his life with the woman he loved. That alone gave Steve Roger's more humanity and a reason to root for him in future films. I hope The Avengers do great business, but I want to watch another stand alone Captain America sequel. It is a great pop-corn film.opcorn:
Thor was good. Natalie Portman though...don't think she had good chemistry with Hemsworth. She's so small. Should've had a taller female with more charisma. Not a f*cking school-girl looking 4'10" cunt.
What you find wrong with this film? I really, really liked it. The whole 1940's skinny Steve Rogers getting the supersoldier serum, plus Red Skull & Hydra...damn, where you watching the new movie or the crappy low budget version from 1990?
The movie was horrible. Just plain awful. The plot was crap the acting was horrid the action was lame the special effects were lame the bad guys were lame the realism was nowhere to be found and most importantly the whole damn movie was CHEESY as hell! Awful awful garbage.
It is a very good movie. Really good. The plot was faithful to its comicbook origins and it shows how determined a physically weakling guy had so much inner will power and with the acquired super strength he still remained the same honest idealistic man. The action was good though not spectacular if that was what disappointed you. The special effects were top notch, particular how they made Chris Evans into a 90 lbs puny weakling. The acting was good from Chris Evans to Tommy Lee Jones to the always impecable Hugo Weaving to the deliciously smart/sexy Hayley Atwell. This not a film for Academy Award performances, but they were good here. Realism? are you serious? this is a damn comicbook story! But I could throw at you how well they portrayed the 1940's era from the costumes, the songs, the black & white propaganda film shorts, the musical numbers with Cap selling USA bonds, etc. In my book the attention paid to those little details was absolutely great. Cheesy? because in the end it makes you sad for Steve Rogers about losing forever the woman he loved and wake up in a far distant future from everything he knew love and fought for? I want more cheesy films like this one and you guys can continue enjoying The Fast & The Furious and Transformers!
I hate both fast and furious and transformers. I'll tell you which comic book movies are good. I haven't seen that many but the good ones off the top of my head are batman series, Thor and Iron man series. This thing is just cheesy. You liked it. Cool. I hated it. Cool too right? See when I said realistic I mean when it looks like the superhero actually could have existed. I never got that from that movie. It looked like a cartoon. His costume is just ridiculous. I think Captain America the superhero is just lame. It's probably why I hated it. He possibly could pull it off in the modern settings (I'll let you know what I think after I see avengers) but in that movie in a world war 2 setting it was just cheesy and cartoonish looking as hell. Plus Red Skull looked lame and also is a lame character. But you liked it and it's cool so don't get all offended if I didn't
This is a very good point Hanz, Portman was too fucking small. Plus she's way older now, not nearly as hot as back in the day...when she did The Professional. :stir:
