Watched this based on the fact that I'll watch any sports-based movie. especially if it's from a book. I don't watch much baseball now, but I understand enough of the rules and stats to enjoy this. Only downsides were Philip Seymour Hoffman was miscast and it's 95% dialogue...otherwise, top movie, great script, good acting..
I thought the movie was very well done. However I did have some serious issues with the end of the movie when they declared that the Boston Red Sox went on to win a championship using the same "Moneyball principles". Not only is that total horseshit due to the substantial differences in payroll between the two teams, but one of the key figures in the first Red Sox championship was Johnny Damon, the same player that the Oakland A's did NOT re-sign because as a player he was the antithesis of the ENTIRE moneyball logistical framework. they went into great detail about this point in the movie, too. That's my other issue with this movie and book - they had to throw in the Red Sox comment to somehow justify the Moneyball system as being valid. the fact is that despite Billy Beane's impressive ability to compete with less money using this system, he has never won a championship with it and the team is not very well run anymore. It's very difficult to sustain success using that philosophy and to be honest ther magical moneyball season had just as much to do with catching lightning in a bottle with 3 or 4 of their young (and therefore not eligible for big contracts yet) starting pitchers than anything else. Also what was with the song at the end with the daughter calling her dad a loser? seemed rather out of place.
you nailed it with the Red Sox thing, there That shit drives me crazy. Second biggest payroll in the league, behind the Yankees. Red Sox fans are the worst.
The movie was pretty good and entertaining. Don't quite get the massive praise and Best Picture nomination.
Ever since "The Blind Side" got nominated, I don't question Oscar nominations anymore. That was some made for TV, Lifetime Movie shit right there. :shit:
This movie didnt give credit to the pitching Oakland had during that season, seems like the team is turning around just by moving Scott Hatteberg to first base.
Must be true because I've done neither and thought this movie was awesome. I love a good drama with good interesting dialogue and this one truly delivered. Fine movie and Pitt just gets better with age. That is one guy who really learned on the job. 9/10
