Not really. Only non-boxing connoisseurs thought he was a great trainer. We hardcore fans know he was only Ali's most trusted man, and a dear friend.

And smart enough to know that to be as such, was the best way to “train" a fighter like Ali.

Perhaps but having Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard on his resume is nothing to sniff at.

Which other trainer has any TWO names that beat those two overall?

Yes, that and the rope-a-dope he invented for Ali.

Lets face it, Dundee is known as Ali's trainer, and thats pretty much it.

Every website I went to today Sly had "Muhammad Ali's Trainer Dies" all over it.

Even Joe Frazier was known as Joe Frazier to the public, not as "Ali's worst opponent"

The public have to be reintroduced to Dundee. As Ali's coach. :lol:Most of them think Sugar Ray Leonard is a type of candy.

I think Dundee lucked out. I have Steward way ahead of him. Steward could take damage cases and reinvigorate them- a la Lewis and Wlad. Wlad was going nowhere fast when Steward took him on, in fact he lost to Brewster under Stewards tutelage very early in his tenure, but Steward turned things around for him. I am not a massive Steward fan either, but I do think he can solve certain problem situations. Of course, you get a guy like Hamed that wants to worship God and proselytize and nobody can fix that, except God, and he prefers Barrera anyways :laugh11:

Even Dundee himself said that Ali "Basically does nothing in training" and any footage I have seen of Dundee and Ali in camp involves Dundee working in a time-keeping, towel-holding capacity.

I'll still miss him, he's another one gone, but not sure about his ATG status.

My favourite Dundee pep talk was before the 12th round of Hagler/Leonard.

RIP Angelo. I'm not going to comments on his merit as a trainer as I haven't done much research on the topic, but "You're blowing it, son" is a classic line, and it may have lit a spark under Ray, or it may not have---but it added to the greatness of that story. Ray went out and got what he needed in that fight. Angelo played a part in it and he didn't sugarcoat it for Ray.

I didn't realize he trained Carmen Basilio in his win over Sugar Ray Robinson (actually trained him at welter and middle). He trained Basilio, Leonard, and Ali. That's a resumé that any trainer would like to have.

Damn, Mantequilla, Foreman, Ellis, Willie Pastrano, Berbick, Nunn, Wilfredo Gomez. Not too bad at all, and he learned from Charlie Goldman and Ray Arcel.
