Sorry to be clear He is Asian plus Good. If he were black and good, no one would care unless he went to Harvard too which would be another novelty. I am a casual Basketball fan, but watched the Knicks/Lakers at the gym whilst working out. Lin is good. The Hype, the murderous hype is because he is good while being Asian.I wasn't clear earlier when I said 75% of it is because he is Asian. That is true and misleading. If he were only Asian and sucked..no one would care. If he were only good and black, no one would care. Asian and good=hype.

We'll disagree on some level here. If it were a black player who came from the same circumstances and averaged 20 pts per game, 7 assists per game while becoming the new starting PG for this severely disapppointing yet star-studded team... people would care, and there would be a lot of hype. to say otherwise is simply incorrect. especially going 5-0 on an 8-15 team in a condensed season.

maybe the hype train wouldn't be quite as big or as widespread if he weren't Asian/American.... but people WOULD care, and it WOULD get national attention and it WOULD be over-hyped until the player came back to reality.

Actually I think it's 50/50. The hype from the media is mostly because of his on court production even though a huge portion of that hype is also because of his nationality and his hyper fans. The hype from the fans though, is purely because he is Asian/American. The reason I know this is because even before he ever stepped on the court this season he probably had more (local) fans than any other player on the Knicks and it was the same way when he was in Golden State and was barely playing.

I've got nothing against it because I was rooting for the guy since I first read about him making the Golden State roster, which he only did because he had 1 outstanding pre-camp game playing against John Wall.

I don't follow basketball, I have no interest in it

but, in fairness, on my lunch break at work I will sometimes listen to the New York sports station WFAN 660, and they (Mike Francessa) have been talking about this guy for the past four days and I didn't know until today when they were talking about this Mayweather thing, that the guy was Asian. I just assumed he was called Jeremy Lynn until today, they never said anything about him being Asian when I was listening and none of the callers brought it up until today with this Mayweather story.

I'm not sure what that says about the whole thing, but I think the fact the kid is playing in New York has plenty to do with the story getting a lot of hype. If he was a white kid, would the story still be big news? I think it would be. It's February, and in the US that is a slow sports month because the super bowl is done, baseball hasn't started yet and the college basketball thing doesn't heat up until next month, so there is not a whole lot to talk about. A kid nobody has ever heard of coming out of nowhere and having a string of outstanding games in NEW YORK is always going to be a big story in a sports climate like that, regardless of whether the kid is Asian or not.

Now, I don't disagree that it is part of the hype, but 75%? come on now. Put any guy of any other race with a similar basketball history as this fellow in his place doing the exact same thing at this type of year in the media center of the country and tell me with a straight face it isn't going to get a lot of press... be real

Maybe the Asian thing nets him a 10-15% increase in coverage. MAYBE.

Is this kid better than Dirk Nowitzki? Can he jump? Do they even play the same position? Why is it called basketball when there are no baskets? A basket with a hole in the bottom? Get the fuck out of here. Sounds like sloppy workmanship. Made in China, probably.

But that is only to be expected, so what's the fuss? Why even bring it up? Everyone already knows it.

This guy broke an NBA record today. Obviously not everyone can do that. He deserves the hype. And it has fuck all to do with his race.

Lin isn't a rookie though, the guys who he eclipsed for that record had their first starts with far less pro experience than him.

He's obviously very good & for real but it seems obvious that part of why he's being celebrated is his race. I don't see anything especially wrong with that, though. You see it to a varying extent any time a member of a race underrepresented in an arena - especially a highly popular and visible one - succeeds, whatever race they may be (yes Irish, even white).

He's no rookie per say but he didn't have very much experience either. He came from a team that barely played him and other than that all he did was play a bunch of D-league games. By the time he got his first start with the Knicks many of this years rookies had probably already passed him in minutes played at the NBA level.

I don't know if Floyd is racist per se, but he is pretty damn ignorant and stupid. I don't know enough about bouncyball to form an opinion on his latest words of wisdom but Floyds previous comments regarding Pacquiao were unfortunate to say the least.

hyped because they were black in environments which traditionally had few black people: tiger woods, venus & serena williams, barack obama.

floyd's such a perfect villain - super-talented, but mean and stupid.

For someone as successful as he is, it's really quite shocking that he is so bitter.

This is a fair statement. I still think the current hype has much more to do with his production and the way he has transformed the team coming from nowhere. It's true that his fanbase was already established because of his heritage, but he didn't get any real hype until he produced. No one was calling for him to get the job beyond logical reason... it just happened because the knicks ran out of options.

An African American complaining about a show of racial pride? Anyone know what grade PBF finished in school. My bet would be fifth grade, but I'm interested in other people's opinions.

Another key part of the story you're leaving out (and quite frankly, the most important) is that the Knicks went from laughing stock to the hottest team in the league. Asian or not, Lin's story barely makes the sport section without the current win streak (six games and counting).

That's the part that overlooked the most in all of this. An ignorant man like Floyd looks at the line results and abruptly comments/whines. Those who think before they speak take in the whole picture.

If it were a white person complaining tgat a particular person was getting attention because he was black, it would be perceived as racist.

Could you imagine? If Joe Thornton came out and said Jerome Iginla isn't that good he just gets attention because he is black?!?! Wow.

FYI those are NHL players if anyone didn't know

If that did happen, it might be because black people have historically suffered more due to racism than any other ethnic group in this country.

so what. That doesnt give black people or anyone else a pass to be racist.

The way i determine if something is racist, is the turn the colors around. If Floyd was white and lin was black, the MSM would be all over this, not just ESPN or some sports sites.

    This is 2012.

A better example would be if Joe Calzaghe came out and said Jerome Iginla isn't that good, he just gets attention because he is black.

Nobody would give a shit, just like nobody outside of the boxing world really gives a shit about Floyd.

Now if Lebron James comes out a calls Lin an Asian Bum, we will have a story. I think Kobe did nothing but mention he didn't know anything about Lin, and he took a lot of flack.

Jason Whitlock (a black reporter, though not a good one) is getting roasted right now for tweeting an Asian dick joke in reference to Lin.

Myself, I don't know why we get caught up in other people's opinions, just because they are public figures. I really don't give a shit about Floyd's thoughts on the matter.

Really? You think this should be the front cover of "Time Magazine" or the front page of "The New York Times"?

It's ridiculous that anybody gives a shit what Floyd thinks about Jeremy Lin.

A black man called Whitlock.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitlock_(surname)

Whitlock is a surname of Old English origin, meaning “white enclosure” from Old English hwit “white” and locc “lock, enclosure”. The name also means "white hair" in Old English.

The irony of it is that Lin probably has a larger schlong than him. Even if he didn't, he probably still gets more tail than him. Rich athletes are not people I would go attacking on matters pertaining to the physique or the ability to attract female affection. Then again, being a "journalist"- especially one of the strictly online nature, there is every chance that Master Whitlock is a thick thick thick cunt.

    Yep - much better example.

I have to admit I don't much care about Floyd's opinion, but i felt more inclined to comment in this thread when someone said Floyd wasn't wrong. Because he is wrong.
