He was supposed to fight Mormeck last year but suffered from a bout w/ kidney stones. The plan last year was a stay-busy fight against Haye, and then a 2012 that included:
-Thompson rematch
-Arreola fight in US
- hopeful Povetkin showdown

When he got injured, he was intent on returning as soon as possible. Thompson wasn't available for March for whatever reason (my guess is Goossen wants Wlad to dump a belt and for his guy to fight for a vacant title instead), so he decided to keep the Mormeck fight for the sake of keeping pace for three targeted fights in 2012.

Steve is a resentful guy, but he has a point, the fight is poo-poo and, as a Wlad fan, its the worst sort of fight, a no-win fight. Win, and its shite. Lose and its still shite except now its embarrassing shite.

I give kudos to the guy for wanting to stay busy, but...a Mormeck fight is bad and a Thompson rematch isn't a whole load better. Povetkin? Povetkin vs Wlad is a poor mans Floyd vs Manny, one guy doesn't want it, the difference is here that we know for sure which of them it is.

None of this, of course, is the guys own fault. He was dead-meat in September of 2005, so every day above ground is gravy. Most fighters follow a high-profile win with a gimme in any case.

He wasn't healthy and he died relatively young, of cancer, in the early 1980's. Literally, he blew up in weight. Getting stopped by a guy who went 1-1 with Sugar Ray Robinson is no mean feat. Getting stopped by a guy who went 1-1 with Sugar Ray Robinson and THEN getting a crack at Marciano is baffling.
