At 154? Who wins. It seems most of you think Sergio Pussy is an atg despite losing to Antonio Margarito and beating the drunken terror Kelly pAVLIK (BARELY) and Tall Paul. What would Sergio Pussy do against a hall of famer. My prediction is a NC. Sergio and GAY rAY WOULD RUN away so fast they would collide trying to run away and get cuts from the collision.
More likely a decision. Both would be pot-shotting and at 154 Leonard's edge in speed would be a decisive one. Clear decision for Ray in a fight that is more 'interesting' than exciting and where neither fighter hurts each other much
Interesting? No...Leonard will be coming forward and Martinez will be running for his life..and if at any point Martinez decides to be the aggressor he will either be met by brutal shot from Leonard or bamboozle by his counter punching skills..
leonard would win but by no means would it be a cake walk. martinez is a difficult guy to fight for anyone
Thats by far the most likely scenario after a few rounds of Martinez getting beaten to the punch and countered to shit every time he's in Leonard's space
I don't see how this is an easy fight for Leonard, Martinez is a lot bigger than him and he's not exactly a bum. Leonard wins in the end, but I highly doubt he KOs him.
When has Leonard been an aggressive, forward-coming fighter by his own choice, much less at 154? Also, why would he do that here, as Martinez is clearly at his best when he gets to counter and as you said, Leonard can beat him to the punch. I am not saying Leonard couldn't probably do that too, I just find it highly unlikely that he would approach this fight that way.
I give you more credit than that. There's no way actual thinking would lead you to most of your boxing opinions. You strike me as an intelligent fellow.
So instead of a personal attack, could you perhaps give the reasons why you find it likely that Leonard attacks Martinez and walks through him, as I can't see that being the probable scenario?
I don't mean coming forward throwing 100 punches around like Chavez - just occupying center ring and pressuring Martinez' space; making him react and lead when he doesn't want to. I guess it just depends on how brave you expect Martinez to be after 4-5 rounds of coming off distant second place in exchanges.
That wouldn't be the early round strategy......it'd be the way the fight ended up looking after Martinez spirit had been broken by being totally bested at his own game. Maybe he'd be brave and start coming forward and get KO'd. Possible, I guess. I think he 'does a Cotto' and gets on his bike.
We do agree on how the fight turns out early it seems. I just believe that Leonard would keep doing that all the way and walk home with a clear decision, I don't see him turning too aggressive at any point. Martinez is somewhat dangerous and Leonard will win anyway so why go there.
When early 80s Leonard got on top of a guy he usually went in settle the debate, though. He wasn't a 21st century girly man. Allot of plastics in the water these days, they say.
agreed this is a mismatch also, I am LOLing at the idea of Leonard pot-shotting, as if he ever fought in that fashion
Agreed pretty much, I'd probably pick Leonard by stoppage. Lenny was a pretty fucking far cry from Floyd and the rest of these safety first ninny boys around today. Leonard would fucking go for it if he sensed he could get a KO, he had some balls to go with his talent and skill. However, I still think Martinez would be top 10 in 1982. He's awkward, athletic, fast, and seemingly has a decent punch at 160. Plus he does have some fundamental skill that is overlooked, such as a decent jab and good footwork, and sets traps for counters etc. He's not amazing, and he's vulnerable, but he's a fair bit better than you and cdogg think.
The way Martinez darts in and out with his hands down works against slow guys like Pav, Williams, and Dzin. But against Leonard, that shit gets him destroyed. Ray was far too fast for Martinez to get away with his technical mistakes.
Perhaps I misuse the word pot-shotting here, what I meant was that Leonard would not push forwards but instead pick his spots for exchanges and try to beat Martinez to punch, which was often his strategy
punch output usually goes down when orthodox vs southpaw because of the extra distance. Add the amount of movement in this fight and Ray might be a little more 'pot-shotty' than normal
Margarito had no trouble with him. HE MADE Sergio Pussy cry and complain after the fight. His feet took the worst of it. He must have run close to 75 miles running from Margarito's slow ponderous shots which made Sergio Pussy cry. The guy would be barely a gatekeeper in any decent era. You know nothing about boxing if you think Sergio Pussy could beat even a Vargas level fighter. He'd be a walk in the park , a tuneup for any hall of famer.
