There is obviously a huge gulf in class here, but 160 lbs is not Hearns' best weight. What transpires? I'm thinking Hearns KO7 or thereabouts..
I don't know if I'd say there's a huge gulf in class here. Obviously, Hearns is the better fighter. He accomplished more and was more impressive. But it's not like Martinez is out of his league here. This isn't Alfonso Gomez or Sergio Mora in there.
Martinez would need to land a bomb like he did against Williams. He wouldn't be able to dart in and out against Tommy because Hearns not only has the reach to fight him from the outside but the speed to catch him when he makes a mistake.
I think Hearns was JUST as effective at 160lbs as he was at 154lb and 147lbs. He knocks out Martinez.
Hearns had some awful hit-and-miss moments at 160+, but they were weight-related or against guys who had a markedly different style to Martinez. Martinez might well have his moments, but I think the styles issue is a bit too much for him.
:l2::l2::l2::l2:Sergio pussy lost 4 to 6 rounds in his last two fights against clubfighters. The guy is the best of a bad lot. He would barely be a gatekeeper in any decent era. Sergio Pussy is rapidly becoming the most overrated fighter here.
You think there's a major gulf in class between Hearns and Martinez? I'm not saying Martinez wins, I'm just saying it's a real competition. Sure, Hearns wins. But not because Martinez doesn't belong in the same ring. Just because he's better.
Hearns maybe at 154 wasn't as good as he was at 147 but that wouldn't matter. The Hitman at his best would take Martinez out mid to late rounds IMO. Sergio's only chance would be a hailmary shot like he got against Williams. Not out of the realm of possibility, but its not likely. Hearns is just too good a boxer for Martinez.
